Women's Hockey Runs Win Streak to Seven with 3-1 Win at St. Lawrence
January 08, 2011 | Women's Ice Hockey
CANTON, N.Y. (1/8/11) - Rachel Weber and Olivia Mucha helped the Princeton women's hockey team run its win streak to seven games with a 3-1 win at St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon. Weber's four-game shutout streak ended in the win but not before it became the longest shutout streak for an ECAC Hockey goaltender.
Weber's shutout streak ended 3:39 into the third period at 289:43. The span included four consecutive shutouts over Syracuse, Boston College, Quinnipiac and Clarkson and surpassed Amanda Mazzotta's (Cornell) streak of 286:54 by less than three minutes as the longest shutout streak in ECAC Hockey history. It was also the fourth longest shutout streak in the NCAA since the 2000-01 season and is a Princeton record, passing the previous mark set by Roxanne Gaudiel in 2004 by 12 minutes.
Weber made 29 saves in the win for Princeton, the most of any game during the streak and her third highest save total of the season. She allowed a goal or less for the eighth time this season in improving to 8-6-1 overall.
The game was scoreless for a long time before Sally Butler's team-leading eighth goal gave Princeton a 1-0 lead late in the second period. Despite being outshot 11-4 in the second period, Princeton went ahead when Butler one-timed a Denna Laing pass for the goal, which was also assisted by Mucha. Princeton took a 2-0 lead 18 seconds into the third period on the power play when Mucha netted her sixth of the season on the deflection of a Sasha Sherry point shot.
St. Lawrence answered with a power play goal of its own to end Princeton's historic shutout streak. Rylee Smith cut to the net and fired a shot that Weber stopped but was unable to corral. Karell Emard, who was skating to the net, knocked the puck out of midair and across the line for her fifth goal of the season to pull St. Lawrence back to within one at 2-1 at 3:39.
Princeton closed the scoring at 17:36 of the third period as Heather Landry converted on the power play to give the Tigers some insurance late. Paula Romanchuk and Gabie Figueroa had assists on the goal.
The win moved Princeton to 10-10-1 overall and 7-6-1 in ECAC Hockey. The Tigers were 3-10-1 on Dec. 3, and have now reached .500 with the seven wins in a row. Princeton now sits third in the ECAC standings with 15 points, although the Tigers have played as many as five more games than some of their fellow ECAC teams.
Princeton will be idle the next two weekends during first semester final exams and return to action the last weekend in January at Hobey Baker Rink, also against St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
