Tigers Win Ivy League Opener Over Penn, 56-45

PRINCETON, N.J. (1/8/11) - Senior Addie Micir scored 18 points to lead the Princeton women's basketball team to a 56-45 win over Penn in the 2011 Ivy League opener on Saturday, Jan. 8 at Jadwin Gym.
Princeton has now won its last six Ivy openers and improves to 5-0 against its travel partner. Princeton extends its Ivy League win streak to 20, ranking third in the nation behind Connecticut and Stanford, and extends its home win streak to 16.
The lead would change three times and was tied four times in the first half. Princeton would take over the lead for good with the first basket of the second half and would work its way up to a 19-point lead. Penn battled back making it a seven-point game with 1:44 to play but it was too little too late.
A three pointer by Micir followed by a layup from Devona Allgood got things started for the Tigers.
However, Penn would hold Princeton scoreless for the field shooting 0-for-6 while going on a 10-0 run to take a 10-5 lead at 10:38.
Micir ended the run with a layup and Princeton would tie the game at 12-12 with seven minute remaining in the half.
Penn would take the lead back on a free throw by Jerin Smith but a bucket by Megan Bowen put Princeton up by one. Lauren Polansky hit one of two from the line to put Princeton up 15-13. A three by Meghan McCullough and a basket by Brianna Bradford gave Penn the 18-15 lead. Laura Johnson sank a three to tie the game before Alyssa Baron nullified the lead with a layup with 26 seconds to play. Allgood slipped one in to tie the game at 20-20 at the end of the half.
Baron's layup would be the Quakers last basket from the field, as Penn shot 0-for-9 for the next 10:12. Princeton reached a 16-point lead, 38-20 during that time.
Five minutes later Princeton would get its largest lead of the game, a 19-point different, 48-29 on a three from Johnson.
The Tigers would go cold as the Quakers brought their deficit back to single digits, on a 14-2 run making it a seven-point game, 50-43 with 1:44 to play.
Micir would put her team back up by double digits with a three from the wing and followed up with the game's next three points, all coming by way of free throws to make it a 56-43 game. Bradford would be followed with three seconds remaining and hit both of her shots to end the game 56-45.
Baron finished the game with 15 points while Bradford had 14, shooting 5-for-5 from the floor. Erin Power and Jourdan Banks both pulled down seven boards and Power would add two blocks. Penn shot 37 percent (17-46) from the field, 53.8 percent from the line and 36.4 percent from long range.
Bowen was the second-leading scorer for the Tigers with nine points, while Allgood added eight. Edwards scored seven and had a game-high four steals. Polansky earned a team-high seven rebounds and had two assist, two steals a block and four points. Princeton finished the game shooting a clip of 33.9 percent (20-59), and was 76.9 percent from the four line, missing just three of 13, and was 37.5 percent from behind the arc.
Princeton improves to 12-3 overall and will take two weeks off for finals and semester break. The Tigers return on Jan. 28-29 with a road trip to Brown and Yale.
