PROVIDENCE, R.I. (12/15/11) - The Princeton field hockey team defeated Brown 6-0 on Saturday to improve to 3-1 in the Ivy League and create a five-team tie atop the Ivy League standings with Dartmouth, Harvard and Yale. Rachel Neufeld and Allison Evans each scored twice in the win as the Tigers reached a season high with six goals.
Princeton jumped on top in the game's seventh minute when Neufeld tipped a long cross from Kelsey Byrne in at the right post for her first goal of the season. Evans would add an unassisted goal in the 16th minute and Neufeld close the first half scoring with a reverse in the 28th minute that was assisted by Evans.
The Tigers continued to pressure Brown and converted on three more chances in the second half. Amanda Bird netted her fourth goal of the season on a direct corner with assists from Sydney Kirby and Charlotte Krause in the 45th minute and Evans made it 5-0 with her team-leading eighth of the year off a feed from Allegra Mango. Cassidy Arner closed out the scoring with a goal late on a penalty stroke. It was her first collegiate goal.
Princeton outshot Brown 30-11 in the game and had nine corners to Brown's six. Christina Maida notched her second shutout of the season with six saves, five of which came in the first half. Shannon McSweeney made 12 saves for Brown.
Princeton's win, along with a Columbia win on Friday, and a Dartmouth loss to Yale and a Harvard win at Cornell on Saturday has set up a five-way tie atop the Ivy League standings with all five teams holding a 3-1 record in league play. The Tigers have defeated Yale and Columbia, fell to Dartmouth, and play at Harvard next Saturday.
Princeton is now 6-6 overall. The Tigers visit fourth-ranked Connecticut on Sunday afternoon.
