Field Hockey Team Plays No. 4 UConn Tough in 3-1 Loss
October 16, 2011 | Field Hockey
STORRS, Conn. (10/16/11) - The Princeton field hockey team put forth one of its best efforts of the season to hang with fourth-ranked Connecticut in a 3-1 loss on Sunday afternoon. Sydney Kirby scored a second half goal for the Tigers in the loss.
Kirby had the first two shots of the game but both were turned aside by UConn goalie Sarah Mansfield. UConn had the next four chances and converted on the fourth when Rayell Heistand scored in the 14th minute to give the Huskies a lead. Molly Goodman would put a shot on the UConn goal and Christina Maida made three more first half saves as the first period ended with Connecticut holding onto the one-goal lead.
The Huskies extended the lead to 2-0 in the second minute of the second half when Anne Jeute scored off a corner off a pass from Jestine Angelini. Princeton responded with a corner a few minutes later and after a Kirby shot was saved, she converted off a feed from Alyssa Pyros in the 42nd minute to trim the lead to a goal.
Princeton had a chance to draw even when UConn's Alicia Angelini received a yellow card in the 62nd minute, allowing Princeton to play with an extra player for five minutes. Erin Jennings had a shot go wide in the span.
Connecticut stretched the lead to 3-1 just after the yellow card expired on Jeute's second goal as she intercepted a clear and lobbed it into the Princeton goal with three minutes remaining. Princeton had two final corner chances in the closing two minutes but couldn't crack the UConn goal as a first shot was blocked and a second was saved by Mansfield.
UConn outshot Princeton 13-8 while the Tigers outcornered the Huskies by a 6-4 margin. Mansfield made five saves for the win while Maida stopped three in the loss.
Princeton is now 6-7 overall. The Tigers resume their Ivy League schedule next Saturday at Harvard.
