PRINCETON (10/20/11) - Five will enter, two or three will remain. That's what this weekend's Ivy League field hockey weekend will look like. Princeton is one of five teams currently tied atop the standings with a 3-1 league record. The Tigers will visit another one of those teams, Harvard, on Saturday afternoon.
In addition to the Princeton-Harvard game, another two of tied teams, Columbia and Dartmouth will meet on Saturday. The last of the five teams deadlocked is Yale, which plays Penn on Sunday. After the weekend, the group of teams tied will shrink to either two or three with two league weekends remaining.
The Tigers enter the weekend with a 6-7 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the Ivy League splitting last weekend's games at Brown and fourth-ranked Connecticut. The Princeton offense broke out in the Brown win, scoring a season-high six goals in the shutout win. Rachel Neufeld and Allison Evans each scored two goals in the win, with Evans adding an assist for a team-high five points. Amanda Bird and Cassidy Arner added goals in the win.
A day later, Princeton put forth a strong effort at UConn, falling to the Huskies 3-1. Sydney Kirby's second half goal trimmed a two-goal UConn lead to one, but the Huskies got an insurance goal in the closing minutes and notched the win.
Princeton resumes its pursuit of an Ivy League title this Saturday at Harvard. The Crimson is currently 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the Ivy League. Harvard has won five of its last seven games, most recently winning 3-1 last Saturday at Cornell. Yale and Brown are the only teams that both Princeton and Harvard have played. The Tigers topped both, while Harvard fell at Yale before winning against Brown.
Princeton is 34-5-2 all-time against the Crimson and 17-3-2 in games played at Harvard. Princeton topped Harvard 4-0 last season at home and has blanked the Crimson in each of the past four games. Last season Kathleen Sharkey scored three goals in the win. Princeton has won the last 17 games in the series.
Princeton returns home next weekend for its final two home games of the regular season. Princeton hosts Cornell on Saturday and Connecticut on Sunday.
