PRINCETON (10/27/11) - A win last Saturday at Harvard, along with the results of two other Ivy League games put the Princeton field hockey team back in the driver's seat for the Ivy League title. The Tigers will look to remain on top of the standings this weekend with a league game against Cornell on Saturday. Princeton also hosts fourth-ranked Connecticut on Sunday.
Entering last weekend there were five teams tied atop the Ivy League standings with one of those teams, Dartmouth, holding a tiebreaker over the Tigers. Following the weekend only three one-loss teams remained as Princeton knocked Harvard to two losses and Columbia handed Dartmouth its second loss. Now Princeton, Columbia and Yale are all tied with 4-1 records in the league. Princeton defeated both teams by a goal in games played at home. By the time that Princeton plays Cornell on Saturday, the Tigers will only be tied with one team as Columbia and Yale meet on Friday night in Manhattan.
Princeton took care of business last weekend with a 4-1 win at Harvard. The Tigers scored two goals in each half and were led by the team's leading scorer, Allison Evans, who scored twice in the win and now has 10 goals scored in her rookie season. Amanda Bird added her fifth goal and Rachel Neufeld notched her third as the Tigers moved back to .500 overall at 7-7 and improved to 4-1 in league play. Princeton outshot Harvard 23-10 and outcornered the Crimson 12-4. After three-straight one-goal games to begin the Ivy schedule, Princeton has outscored Ivy opponents 10-1 in the last two games.
The Tigers will look to join either Yale or Columbia at 5-1 on Saturday when Cornell visits Class of '52 Stadium. The Tigers have had the better of the all-time series with the Big Red by a 25-5-3 margin and are 13-2-1 in the series at home. Princeton has won the last three games, including a 3-2 win last season in Ithaca. The Tigers built a 3-0 lead in the win before Cornell scored twice during a yellow card in the final minutes. Kathleen Sharkey had the first two Tiger goals in the win and Allison Behringer netted the third.
Cornell is 7-8 overall and 1-4 in the Ivy League. The Big Red's first Ivy win came last Saturday over Brown by a 4-2 score. Cornell is 4-2 in its last six games with three wins coming against non-league foes. The Big Red defeated Lehigh, Bucknell and Georgetown in the span, but fell last Sunday to Rutgers in their last outing.
Princeton concludes the weekend against fourth-ranked Connecticut on Sunday in the second meeting this season between the two. UConn won 3-1 at home two weeks back as Anne Jeute scored twice for the Huskies. Sydney Kirby scored for Princeton early in the second quarter to trim a two-goal UConn lead to a goal, but the Tigers couldn't get the equalizer before a late UConn insurance marker. The Tigers are 7-11 all-time against the Huskies and 3-4 in the series at home.
UConn in 15-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Big East this season. The Huskies have won nine games in a row, most recently edging Syracuse 3-2 in double overtime last Sunday at home. The Huskies' lone loss of the season came to Boston College and UConn has wins over ranked foes Stanford, Penn State and Syracuse. UConn visits Rutgers on Friday night in a league game.
Following the weekend Princeton has one Ivy game remaining next Friday at Penn.
