Women's Squash Completes Perfect Opening Weekend With Sweep Of Middlebury
November 21, 2011 | Women's Squash
The Princeton women's squash team wrapped up a perfect opening weekend to the 2011-12 season by sweeping Middlebury College in its home opener.
One day after taking every game in a 9-0 win over Franklin & Marshall, Princeton matched that feat against Middlebury. For the weekend, the Tigers were 54-0 in games, and 17 of the 27 games played Saturday were decided in 12 points or fewer.
Princeton sent out three underclassmen and one senior in the first shift and built a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Libby Eyre made her debut this season with a 7, 6 and 2 win over Abigail Jenkins, a match that turned out to be the closest of the day. Classmate Caroline Feeley and freshman Hallie Dewey both won, as did senior Daphne Rein-Weston, who dropped only seven points at the No. 8 position.
Princeton kept rolling in the second shift, and it got wins from every class along the way. Senior Eliza Kontulis dropped only five points in a win at the No. 9 spot, while junior Julie Cerullo, the third-ranked player in the nation, defeated Elena Laird 4, 4 and 3 at No. 1.
Sophomore Lexi Saunders won at the No. 3 spot, while both freshmen Nicole Bunyan (No. 5) and Alex Lunt (No. 7) also earned wins. Lunt had the most dominant performance of the day, dropping only three points and winning the final two games by matching 9-0 scores.
Princeton will expect a far tougher test in its next match, as it takes on Penn Dec. 3 at 3:30 at the Ringe Squash Courts in Philadelphia. The two teams split last season, as Penn won 5-4 during the regular season and Princeton came back with a 7-2 win in the Howe Cup quarterfinal.
