Women's Squash Drops Tight Ivy League Opener At Penn 6-3
December 04, 2011 | Women's Squash
The rivalry between Princeton and Penn has become one of the best in Ivy League women's squash, and the two put forth another tight match Saturday afternoon in the Ivy League opener. Penn used a quick start to score a 6-3 home victory at th Ringe Squash Courts.
Princeton will hope to have the same opportunity as it did last year; the Tigers dropped a regular season match to Penn, but they eliminated the Quakers 7-2 in the Howe Cup quarterfinals.
Penn led 3-1 after the first shift, though Princeton freshman Nicole Bunyan earned a win in her first career Ivy match with a 3-1 victory at No. 8. After splitting two close games, Bunyan grabbed wins of 11-2 and 11-5 to take the match. Unfortunately, that would be the only match to go the Tigers' way early; the toughest loss came at No. 6, where Alex Sawin rallied from a 2-0 deficit with back-to-back 12-10 wins. The fifth game would also be close, but Penn's Courtney Jones took the match with a 10-8 win.
Princeton junior Julie Cerullo, the third-ranked player in the country, gave Princeton its second win during the second shift with a 3-0 victory over Nabilla Ariffin at the No. 1 position. Sophomore Lexi Saunders also earned a victory with a 12-10, 11-7, 11-9 win over Stephanie Vogel at the No. 5 spot.
The remaining three matches all featured close games, but Penn won almost every one of them. Pia Trikha dropped the first game to Princeton co-captain Katie Giovinazzo, but she bounced back with wins of 11-9 and 12-10 to grab control of an eventual win. Colleen Fehm beat Princeton freshman Alex Lunt 3-0, but each of the three games was decided by two points apiece, and Leslie Gill topped Caroline Feeley 3-0 at the No. 9 spot.
Princeton returns to the court next weekend with non-league matches against both Williams (Friday) and George Washington (Saturday); the latter will begin at 2 p.m. at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
