Princeton Falls To Navy 65-52, Comes Home To Face DePaul Tuesday
December 10, 2011 | Women's Basketball
A little to the left and high above the basket in front of the Naval Academy bench at Alumni Hall hangs the five retired jersey numbers in Navy basketball history. The most prominent name on the list is the one under the giant No. 50, and it belongs to David Robinson, without question the greatest basketball player ever to play for the Midshipmen.
While Jade Geif is not quite David Robinson, she is the Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year, and shd did put up numbers Friday night that would have made Robinson proud. And in doing so, she caused Princeton to have a long ride home from Annapolis.
Geif scored 18 points on 9 for 11 shooting while adding eight rebounds as defending Patriot League-champion Navy defeated Princeton 65-52 in front of 2,312 Friday night. Geif scored six straight for Navy to snap a 43-43 tie midway through the second half, and Navy would not trail again after that.
The win was the fifth straight for Navy after a 1-3 start, while Princeton slipped to 7-2. The Tigers host No. 21/22 DePaul Tuesday night at Jadwin Gym before heading to California to play No. 4 Stanford and Santa Clara next Saturday and Monday.
The difference in the game was Geif, Princeton's inability to use its press to get easy baskets and enough foul shooting by Navy down the stretch.
Navy led 34-32 at the half as the teams combined to go 10 for 18 from three-point range in the first 20 minutes.
Sparked by Lauren Edwards, Princeton built its biggest lead at 42-37 after a 10-3 run to start the second half. The Mids would tie it at 43-43, but Geif broke that tie, with Princeton's last lead at 46-45 after a three-pointer by Niveen Rasheed that was answered by two striaght Geif baskets.
Down the stretch, Navy was hardly dazzling at the foul line, but the Mids got there more than enough to build on the lead. In fact, after not attempting a first-half foul shot, Navy went 12 for 21 in the second half, including 10 for 15 in the final 2:07.
Rasheed was the only Tiger in double figures, and she finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Edwards had eight, while Blake Dietrick and Devona Allgood had six each.
