Wrestling Prepares For In-State Showdown With No. 16 Rutgers Saturday
December 09, 2011 | Wrestling
Coming off its win over Old Dominion last weekend, the Princeton wrestling team is bringing both momentum and energy into its final home match of the calendar year. The Tigers will need both against nationally ranked Rutgers, which will bring a trio of Top-15 wrestlers to Dillon Gym for the 1 p.m. match.
Princeton is 1-3 on the dual meet season, but it has had two terrific results in the last month. At the Keystone Classic, held at The Palestra prior to Thanksgiving, Princeton outperformed a handful of Ivy League teams and placed fourth at the 2011 Keystone Classic. Junior Garrett Frey (125) and senior Daniel Kolodzik (157) both reached their respective individual finals, while four other Princeton wrestlers placed in the top six.
Last weekend, Princeton defeated Old Dominion 18-14 during its home-opening competition at Dillon Gym. Freshman Chris Perez (133) and sophomore Adam Krop (141) picked up early wins, and Kolodzik defeated the 15th-ranked wrestler in the nation. A major decision for senior Andy Lowy (174) helped put away the Monarchs, who earned a win over Iowa State earlier this season.
Princeton faces its toughest competition so far this season when the 16th-ranked Scarlet Knights come to Dillon Gym. Rutgers is led by Minnesota transfer Mario Mason, a former teammate of Garrett Frey at Blair Academy. Mason is undefeated on the season and ranked fourth at 149. Junior Scott Winston, the first New Jersey high school wrestler to ever record an undefeated record throughout his career, is ranked sixth at 165.
This will be Princeton's final home match until the middle of January, when the Tigers host both Millersville (Jan. 13) and Cornell (Jan. 14).
