Women's Water Splits Games Against Western Foes

PRINCETON (2/13/11) - The 18th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team split a pair of games against western opponents on Sunday at the Princeton Invitational at DeNunzio Pool. Princeton defeated Colorado State 11-10 in overtime in the morning, but fell to 19th-ranked Pacific 6-4 in the afternoon.
Princeton began the day with an early morning contest against Colorado State. Princeton opened up a lead of three goals early in the third quarter but the Rams bounced back and eventual tied the game at 7-7 in the final minute of regulation. Both teams scored three goals in the two regular overtime periods before Princeton won the game in the first sudden death period.
After falling behind 1-0 in the game, Princeton never trailed again in the win. Brittany Zwirner gave Princeton its first overtime lead at 8-7 and Katie Rigler scored two of her three goals in the second overtime to give Princeton leads of 9-8 and 10-9, but CSU answered both times. Zwirner would then score the game winner a minute into the third overtime period with her fourth goal of the game.
Zwirner's four goals led all Tigers and she added three assists and three steals. Rigler had three goals and Saranna Soroka scored twice. Cari Levine and Molly McBee added single goals. Kristen Ward made eight saves in the win to pick up third win.

Princeton season-opening three-game win streak was snapped on Sunday afternoon with a 6-4 loss to Pacific. Princeton fell behind twice in the game by three goals. The first time Princeton dug out of the hole to even up the score at 3-3 by halftime, but Princeton couldn't rally again in the loss.
Pacific built a 3-0 first half lead with two goals in the first quarter and one in the second, but Princeton countered with three goals in the second quarter to knot the game up. All three goals came on ejections as Rachele Gyorffy scored the first and third Princeton goals and McBee scored the second.
Princeton had drawn even but against fell behind as Pacific scored twice in the third quarter and once in the fourth to rebuild a three-goal margin. Rigler would would move the Tigers within two with two minutes left to play but the Tigers could not get any closer and fell by the 6-4 final.

Princeton is now 3-1 after its opening weekend of play. The Tigers have next weekend off and return the water in two weeks on Feb. 26 when they visit Bucknell for the ECAC Championship.
