Men's Basketball Beats Yale 58-51, Remains Unbeaten in Ivy
February 19, 2011 | Men's Basketball
The Tigers never trailed in a 58-51 win at Yale, improving Princeton to 20-4 overall and 8-0 in the Ivy. Yale fell to 12-11 overall and 5-4 in the Ivy, with six of the eight league teams, aside from Princeton and Harvard (19-4, 8-1), having at least four losses.
Princeton's back-to-back 20-win seasons are its first since 1998 and 1999, and the Tigers' 10-game win streak is the program's longest since 1999. The 8-0 start is Princeton's best in league play since 1998, which will continue to be the standard no matter how long these Tigers can keep the Ivy-unbeaten run going. The 1998 team was Princeton's last to finish 14-0 in the league.
The victory also makes Princeton coach Sydney Johnson one of five to lead the team to multiple 20-win seasons, alongside Albert Wittmer (two), Bill Carmody (three), Butch van Breda Kolff (three) and Pete Carril (10).
Kareem Maddox led the Tigers with 16 points, with Dan Mavraides close behind at 15. Mavraides, who enjoyed his first career double-double with 10 rebounds, raised his career total to 959 as he looks to become the 28th player in Princeton history to reach 1,000 points.
Maddox nearly had a double-double himself, pulling down nine boards to help the Tigers take a 39-35 rebounding edge over a Yale team that includes the Ivy League's leading rebounder in Greg Mangano. The Yale junior paced his team with 15 points and a game-high 12 boards.
Princeton turned the Bulldogs over at a rate of better than two to one, the Tigers bouncing back from their 18-turnover game at Cornell last Saturday to commit only seven giveaways in New Haven, less than half as many as Yale's 15.
Those 15 Yale turnovers led to 16 Princeton points, no small amount in a seven-point final. Yale had just four points off Princeton turnovers.
Princeton slowly increased its lead in the first half to as many as 14 at 28-14 on Mack Darrow's 3-pointer with 2:08 before the break.
Yale chipped away at a Princeton lead that stood at 12 with 10:56 to go in the game at 45-33, eventually getting the deficit to three at 52-49 on a Reggie Willhite dunk with less than two minutes to go.
But Princeton let it get no closer, going on a 6-2 run to end the game. Yale committed a pair of turnovers and missed its only field goal attempt of the final 1:47.
Princeton's game at Brown Saturday night will begin at 6 p.m. The Bears suffered a 70-62 defeat to Penn Friday night.
