Men's Track & Field Wraps Up Final Meet Before Heps

PRINCETON, N.J. (2/19/11) - The Princeton men's track & field team competed in its final home meet of the indoor season, the Princeton Invitational, and the last meet before Ivy League Heptagonals.
Senior Craig Pearce threw a personal best in the weight throw, finishing third overall and first among collegians. Pearce threw to 19.50 meters (63-11.75), 11 inches longer than his previous best throw.
The Princeton name dominated the shot put. Senior George Abyad won the event throwing to 16.92 meters (55-6.25), just a half inch past alum Eric Plummer '10. Plummer ranks fourth all-time at Princeton in the shot put and launched his furthest shot to 16.91 (55-5.75). Junior Patrick Park finished third with a toss of 16.26 (53-4.25).
Freshman Tom Hopkins was the runner-up in the long jump. He jumped to 7.02 meters (23-0.50). He, along with first-place jumper Herman Kirkland of Shippensburg, where the only two to reach over 23 feet.
Senior Garner McCloud won the triple jump in his first time out in the event this season. He launched to 14.08 (46-2.50) nearly four feet further than Samuel Nkama of CCNY who placed second.
Freshman Omar Jarrett was third in the high jump clearing 1.90 (6-2.75).
Juniors David Slovenski and Derek Hynes were the only two pole vaulters to get over 16 feet as they finished first and second, respectively. Slovenski won with a mark of 5.10 (16-8.75), while Hynes was second at 4.95 (16-2.75), a new personal record.
Freshman Brian Mills and junior Ivan Charbonneau both qualified for the finals for the 60 meter-dash out of 26 competitors. Mills finished third at 7.05 while Charbonneau was sixth at 7.16.
In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Richard Sheldon bested his time in the preliminaries by 0.10 seconds by clocking in at a season-best 8.12. Senior Adam Thayer also made the finals and ran 8.88 to finish eighth.
Freshman Michael Williams won the 800 at 1:57.09, just beating out Corey Wall of Delaware TC who ran 1:57.10. It was Williams' first time running the 800 in his collegiate career.
Junior Nilan Schnure was third in the 400 at 50.77 in just his second time running the 400 this season. In the 200, sophomore Sebastian Steffen placed third with a time of 22.91.
