Tigers Take Down Brown 75-38 in Women's Basketball

PRINCETON, N.J. (2/19/11) - The second half made all the difference as Princeton scored 44 points and held Brown to just 15, as the Tigers defeated Brown 75-38 on Saturday, Feb. 19 before a bustling crowd of over 1,500 for the annual women's basketball Pink Zone game.
Junior Lauren Edwards had a game-high 20 points, three assists, three steals and four rebounds. Sophomore Megan Bowen recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Devona Allgood and freshman Nicole Hung each contributed 12 points, a career high for the rookie. Allgood added eight rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Lauren Polansky had a team-high five assists, while senior Addie Micir had four and team-best four steals. Thirty-one of Princeton's 75 points came via its bench.
"Our freshmen gave us a great contribution," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "We knew we were going to need them tonight. I'm glad that the Jadwin faithful were able to see what we see every day," which is the freshmen really developing within the team."
It was a back and forth affair in the first half, but Princeton would maintain the lead after the third minute.
Down 9-4, Brown would score two baskets to make it a one-point game at 12:02. Princeton got buckets from Polansky and Bowen to stretch the lead to six, 14-8 at 11:12. Princeton wouldn't get any further out ahead than six, while Brown would make it a one-point game again at 2:23 after Hannah Passafuime went 2 for 2 from the line and Lindsay Nickel drained a three from the right wing.
The Tigers closed out the half on a 7-0 run, getting baskets from Hung, Bowen and a three from Edwards, to make it 31-23 at the end of one.
Princeton started the second half on a 9-0 run to take a 40-23 lead. Sophomore Kate Miller would score five of those points, with Edwards and Allgood getting one basket each.
The teams would trade baskets before Princeton scored 10 unanswered with Miller hitting a three and Edwards getting a three-point play, to go along with a basket each for Allgood and Micir that would put the Tigers up, 52-27 with 10:42 remaining.
In the next five minutes, Brown would only get as close as 21, before Princeton rattled off 16 straight in a span of 3:45, to take a 75-37 lead with 18 seconds on the clock. With seven seconds left Brown's Laura Kobashigawa would sink a futile free throw as Princeton walked off the court with a 75-38 victory.
Passafuime led the team with nine points. Aileen Daniels added eight and Nickel scored six. Sophie Beutel had a team-best seven rebounds and Daniels was next in line with five, while chipping in a team-best three assists. The Bears shot 32.6 percent (15-46) overall, was 3 for 16 from long range and 5 of 8 from the free-throw line.
It was Princeton's 11th straight win over Brown, as the Tigers improve to 19-4 overall and 8-1 in league play to sit in first place. Tonight's victory also marked Princeton's 20-straight win at Jadwin Gym.
The Tigers will make their final Ivy League road swing of the season next weekend when they travel to Cornell on Friday, Feb. 25 and to Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 26.
