Women's Basketball Completes Season Sweep with 65-52 Win Over Columbia
February 27, 2011 | Women's Basketball
NEW YORK (2/26/11) - The Princeton women's basketball team completed a season sweep of both Cornell and Columbia as the Tigers turned in a 65-52 win over the Lions on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Levien Gym.
Senior Addie Micir led the Tigers with 17 points while sophomore Kate Miller had 13. Senior Krystal Hill added nine points and junior Laura Johnson scored eight. Junior Lauren Edwards led the team on the glass with nine rebounds while sophomore Lauren Polansky grabbed seven.
"On a night where we really couldn't find a groove offensively, to go to the free throw line 27 times, to have 19 o-boards and 25 points off our bench, we imposed our will to win. We also held Columbia to 15 points below its Ivy League home average. I can't say enough about Addie's leadership on the floor. It was a hard fought game and we're thrilled to come out with a win."
Princeton jumped out to a 13-4 lead eight minutes into the game. Hill scored five during that span, Miller had a three-point play, Edwards hit a three and Megan Bowen had a pair of free throws.
Columbia would make it a three-point game, 17-14, at 7:58 on a 10-4 run.
Two quick three's by Micir and Johnson made it a nine-point game, and Johnson would hit a jumper to push Princeton's lead to 11, 25-14, with 5:26 remaining in the half.
The Lions responded with a 9-2 run to make it a two-possession game, 27-23, with 2:49 on the clock.
Freshman Kristen Helmstetter came off the bench and seconds later would force a foul and would hit a pair of free throws. Miller buried a three to put Princeton up 32-23 with 1:28 left.
A Tyler Simpson free throw would make it an eight-point game, 32-24 at halftime.
Junior Devona Allgood would give Princeton back a double-digit lead on the opening basket of the second half. Columbia would creep back within nine, 40-31, at 14:27 but it would be as close as the Lions would get.
Princeton would go on a 9-1 run over the next 3:39 to take a 17-point edge, 49-32.
Two minutes later Princeton had maintained that 17-point advantage before Johnson gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game with a three at 7:15, 56-36.
Columbia had a 7-0 spurt in a quick 50 seconds to make it 56-43 as Melissa Shafer hit a three, earned a steal and a fast break layup followed by two made free throws by Kathleen Barry.
Princeton would regain the 17-point lead with 4:37 on the clock with two made free throws by Micir and a bucket by Helmstetter.
Columbia would finish off the game on a 6-2 run to settle the score, 65-52.
Both Columbia seniors Lauren Dwyer and Barry scored in double digits on Senior Night with 12 and 11, respectively. Shafer added 10 points and Brianna Orlich had seven. Simpson had a team-high seven rebounds and Barry had five. Columbia shot 37.2 percent (16-43) from the field, was 27.3 percent (3-11) from long range and was 17 for 23 from the line.
Princeton shot 38 percent (19-50) overall and 47.4 percent (9-19) from behind the arc and made 18 of 27 free throws.
Princeton improves to 21-4 overall and 10-1 in the Ivy League. The Tigers can win the league title outright by winning two of their last three games, as Harvard and Yale sit in the standings with three losses, after Yale defeated Harvard earlier this evening.
The Tigers return home next weekend to host Dartmouth and Harvard.
