Baseball Topped in Series Finale at VCU

RICHMOND, Va. (3/14/11) - An early deficit proved too much for the Princeton baseball team to overcome in an 18-6 loss at Virginia Commonwealth on Monday afternoon. Sam Mulroy had two hits and two RBIs in the loss for Princeton, which now falls to 2-5 this season.
VCU plated a single run in the first added another five runs in the third inning to build an early lead. It was 9-0 after three innings before the Tigers scored four times in the fifth. In that inning, Matt Bowman and John Mishu drove in runs with singles and Mulroy hit a two-run double.
VCU added another three runs in the bottom of the fifth and then five more in the seventh as it extended its lead. For the third straight game, Princeton scored runs in the top of the ninth as Princeton closed the game with two runs in its final at-bat as Alex Flink hit an RBI-single and Will Davis followed with a run-scoring single to plate Flink.
David Benson got the win for VCU with six innings of work in which he didn't allow an earned run. Mike Ford was tagged for nine runs on 12 hits in four innings in the loss. Ryan Makis and Stephen Elmore pitched in relief.
Princeton fell to 2-5 with the loss. The Tigers travel to face 18th-ranked North Carolina tomorrow afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C.
