Men's Lights Open Season With Impressive Wins Over Navy, MIT
March 26, 2011 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The two-time defending EARC and IRA national champion Princeton men's lightweight crew picked up where it left off both last spring and following the fall racing season. The Tigers retained the Joe Murtaugh Cup and won four of five races overall during the season-opening regatta against Navy and MIT Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie.
The Princeton varsity eight, with two-time national championship rowers Robin Prendes and Christian Klein leading the way, was in total control in its victory over Navy and MIT. Head coach Marty Crotty's crew won the top race in 6:11.8, while Navy finished nine seconds later in 6:20.8. MIT rounded out the race in 6:43.4.
Both the second and third varsity races also went to Princeton. The 2V also posted a big margin of victory, winning in 6:24.5 for more than a nine-second edge over the Midshipmen. The third varsity was locked in a closer race, but the Tigers' time of 6:37.1 was 2.3 seconds faster than Navy.
While there is plenty of present excitement for Princeton, future optimism was evident in an exciting novice eight win. The closest race of the day went to a Princeton boat making its collegiate debut; the Tigers won in 6:29.3, while Navy finished second in 6:32.1.
"I was nervous coming into today because Navy always gives us a tough race," Crotty said afterwards. "There are some fresh faces in our top boats and I wasn't sure how they would handle the pressure of the first race. I was happy to see that, despite some pretty frigid and tricky wind conditions, all of our crews did as well as I can expect for this time of year. It doesn't get any easier next weekend, with Columbia and Georgetown coming to town"
Princeton, which has now won 22 of its last 23 regular season races, will remain on Lake Carnegie next Saturday to compete for The Fosburgh Cup against Georgetown and Columbia. The regatta, which will be Princeton's final home race of the season, will begin at 9 a.m.
