Four Pitchers Combine to Two Hit Seton Hall in 2-1 Win

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (3/30/11) - Four pitchers combined to hold Seton Hall to a single run on two hits as the Princeton baseball team edged the Pirates 2-1 in 10 innings on Wednesday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. Princeton had nine hits in the win and broke through in the 10th when an infield single and a throwing error allowed Matt Bowman to score the game-winning run.
Four of Princeton's weekend relievers teamed up for the strong outing on the mound. Matt Grabowski and David Palms each pitched three scoreless innings as Grabowski allowed a single hit and Palms allowed only a walk. Matt Welsh surrendered a run on a hit in two innings and Ryan Makis faced the minimum over the final two innings to secure his first win of the season.
Jonathan York had three hits and also reached base on a walk in the seventh when Princeton scored its first run to lead the Tigers. Matt Bowman also singled twice in the game and Alex Flink had two doubles after pinch-hitting in the seventh to drive in the first Tiger run.
Princeton scored the first run of the game in the seventh inning with a two-out rally that came about with an error to Seton Hall pitcher Ed Ras. Batting with two outs, Ryan Albert reached on his throwing error and went to second on the overthrow. After York walked, Flink hit a pinch-hit double down the right field line and Princeton took the lead.
Seton Hall drew even in the eighth inning after Michael Betz was hit by Welsh to lead off the inning. He went to second on a sac bunt and came around to score on Mike Genovese's single up the middle.
Princeton left two on base in the ninth but was able to push the go-ahead run across in the 10th inning to take the 2-1 lead. Bowman bunted for a base hit and went to second when Mike Ford singled up the middle. Seton Hall got the next out but Nate Baird hit an infield single to third base and Ryan Parker's errant throw to first let Bowman score with the winning run.
Rick Mangione took the loss for Seton Hall.
Princeton's win was its fifth of the season and second in a row as Princeton now sits 5-13 overall with the start of the Ivy League schedule a few days away. Princeton hosts Brown for a doubleheader on Saturday at Clarke Field.
