Maddox, Hummer, Mavraides Earn All-Ivy Honors
March 09, 2011 | Men's Basketball
PRINCETON -- The Ivy League's coaches have voted All-Ivy League honors for a trio of Princeton men's basketball players, including a first-team and Defensive Player of the Year honor to Kareem Maddox and second-team honors to Dan Mavraides and Ian Hummer.
Maddox's selection as a first-team All-Ivy Leaguer is the first for any Tiger since 2006. The trio are a part of the first Princeton team since 2004 to win an Ivy League title, which these Tigers accomplished in the season finale at Penn on Mar. 8. It is the program's 26th league crown, the most of any Ivy school.
It is the first All-Ivy honor for Maddox, a unanimous first-team all-league pick who has been a major force on both ends of the floor for the Tigers this season. Maddox leads the team in blocks with 52 and is one of only two Princeton players in the last 35 years, along with Chris Young '02, to have 50 blocks in a season. The 6-8 senior forward is third in the Ivy in blocked shots at 1.7 per game, fourth in defensive rebounds at 5.0 per game, fourth in overall rebounds at 6.9 per game, seventh in scoring at 14.0 points per game and second in field goal percentage at .575. Maddox has seven 20-point games this season and is the first Tiger since 1984 to have two 30-point games in a season.
Mavraides, a 6-4 senior guard, is on the second-team All-Ivy for the second straight year. Though just last Saturday at Harvard Mavraides became the 28th member of the Princeton 1,000-point club, the senior can also distribute the ball, leading the Tigers in assists with 85 including at least one in each of the last 28 games. Mavraides ranks 13th in the Ivy League in scoring at 12.7 points per game, 11th in rebounding at 4.7 per game, 10th in assists at 2.8 per game, seventh in 3-pointers per game at 1.9, ninth in defensive rebounds at 4.1 per game, and ninth in minutes per game at 32.9.
Hummer earns his first All-Ivy honor and was Princeton's scoring leader through much of the season, now carrying a 13.9 point-per-game average that ranks eighth in the Ivy League and second among players without a 3-pointer this season. His 6.7-per game rebounding average ranks sixth in the league, and his .556 field goal percentage is third, right behind Maddox. Hummer is also fourth in blocked shots at 1.4 per game, again right behind Maddox.
All three players have had at least one double-double this season, while Hummer's five ties him for third in the Ivy League in that statistical accomplishment.
