Women's Water Polo Closes Regular Season at Maryland
April 15, 2011 | Women's Water Polo
Princeton's last two games are against CWPA Southern Division teams so the games will be used in seeding for the upcoming CWPA Eastern Championships in two weekends at Indiana. As it stands now, Princeton and Maryland look to be the fourth and fifth seeds, in either order, for the event, which gives first-round byes to each of the top five seeds.
Princeton played twice last week, winning a Thursday night game over Villanova at home and then topping Harvard on Saturday in a game played at Bucknell. In the 9-2 win over Villanova, eight Tigers had goals and were led by Katie Rigler's pair of tallies. Molly McBee had a goal and an assist in the win and Grace du Pont made 13 saves in picking up the win.
Two days later, it was an 11-5 Princeton win over Harvard as the Tigers raced to a 7-0 lead and never looked back. Brittany Zwirner had three goals and Lauren Brunner added two goals and two assists for the Tigers. Kristen Ward stopped 10 shots in goal for the Tigers.
The wins moved Princeton to 15-9 overall and gave the Tigers four wins in five tries since returning from their Spring Break trip to California. Princeton is 2-0 against Southern Division teams, topping both George Washington and Harvard. Princeton's final two division games come this weekend.
Princeton begins the weekend on Saturday night against Maryland in the teams' second meeting of the season. Princeton dropped the first one 11-10 on Feb. 26 in the ECAC Semifinal at Bucknell. In the back-and-forth game, Maryland overcame a one-goal deficit after three quarters to win by a goal. Rigler had three goals in the game and Zwirner had two goals and two assists. The Tigers are 25-16 all-time against Maryland and had won four straight meetings between the teams prior to the loss in February.
Princeton concludes the weekend on Sunday morning against Brown in the second meeting of the season between the teams. They also played on Feb. 12 on the first day of Princeton's season and the Tigers earned a 12-1 win in the game. McBee scored three goals, while Brunner and Zwirner added two scores each. Princeton is 16-5 all-time against Brown and has won the last nine meetings between the schools.
