Women's Hockey Announces Award Winners at Annual Banquet

Junior goaltender Rachel Weber was given the Elizabeth English Trophy, which is presented annually to the member of the women's hockey team, voted by her teammates to be the most valuable player. It is named in honor of Elizabeth English '75, whose efforts helped to establish women's ice hockey at Princeton. Weber was a second-team All-ECAC and All-Ivy selection. She was 14-10-1 overall with a 1.77 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage. She set a Princeton single season record for save percentage and had a 289:43 shutout streak during the season, the longest in ECAC history and the fourth longest in NCAA women's hockey history.
Senior defenders Sasha Sherry and Laura Martindale shared the Patty Kazmaier Award, which is given annually to the senior member of the women's hockey team who has made the greatest contribution to the program during her career and best exemplifies the following characteristics: Loyalty and devotion to Princeton Women's Hockey and determination and perseverance under adverse conditions. The two were mainstays on the Tiger blue line for four years. Martindale served as a captain as a senior and played in 123 games. Sherry made 117 appearances and ranks third all-time at Princeton in points by a defenseman. She also was Princeton's first All-America selection as a sophomore.
Weber was also honored with the team's Most Improved Player Trophy. It is awarded annually to the member of the women's hockey team that has improved the most and is voted on by her teammates. Weber earned 14 of her 22 career wins and six of her nine shutouts as a junior.
Junior Charissa Stadnyk received the Unsung Hero Award, which is awarded annually to the member of the women's hockey team voted by her teammates to be the team's unsung hero during the season. Stadnyk made the transition from forward to defense last season and became a reliable member of the Princeton defensive corps. She also contributed seven points from the blue line.
The Rookie of the Year Award was presented to freshman Denna Laing. Laing was one of three freshmen to rank in Princeton top-four scorers and recorded 18 points on eight goals and 10 assists in her rookie campaign.
Princeton also announced its 2011-12 team captains. Paula Romanchuk, a co-captain along side of Martindale this past season, will again wear a C. She will be joined as co-captain with Stadnyk.
The night concluded with recognition of Princeton's three members of the Class of 2011-Martindale, Caroline Park and Sherry.
