Top-Ranked Lightweight Men Retain Fosburgh Cup In Home Finale
April 02, 2011 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
In its final regatta on Lake Carnegie for the 2011 season, the top-ranked Princeton men's lightweights swept four races against both Georgetown and Columbia to retain the Fosburgh Cup and improve its current stretch to 24 victories in 25 regular-season races.
The Princeton first varsity, which earned the top spot in the first national poll of the season, was challenged by the fourth-ranked Hoyas, but Princeton wasn't about to lose its final home contest of the season. Princeton won in 5:58.7, nearly four seconds faster than Georgetown (6:02.5). Columbia finished third in 6:12.2.
The Princeton 2V was in total control of its race, winning in 6:09.4. Its biggest challenge came from its own 3V teammates, who ended up second in a time of 6:22.2. Georgetown finished third in 6:27.4, while Columbia finished in 6:30.5.
The Princeton freshman eight continued its perfect season with a winning time of 6:09.9, five seconds faster than second-place Columbia (6:14.9) and more than 10 seconds ahead of Georgetown. The Princeton 4V also got a win, topping the Georgetown 2F in a time of 6:45.3.
"Each boat was able to get an early lead, which is great, but there are still plenty of things we need to improve on," head coach Marty Crotty said. "I'm happy the seniors in our crews were all able to enjoy their last race on Lake Carnegie. It was a special day for those guys and the team really rallied around them. Guys like Dan Nickel, three-seat of my second varsity, who have made huge contributions to the heart and soul of this team for several years now, will never forget it."
Princeton will be off next weekend, but will return to the water April 16 in the Platt Cup regatta against Cornell. Those two programs have combined to win the last four national championships.
