Ruggiero Sets Record and Three Win on Final Day of Sam Howell Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. (4/2/11) -Sophomore Greta Feldman won the 800, senior Thanithia Billings took top honors in the shot put and freshman Imani Olver won the triple jump as the Princeton women's track & field team wrapped up the final day of the Sam Howell Invitational on Saturday, April 2 at Weaver Stadium. In addition, senior Emma Ruggiero was the top collegian in the hammer throw posting a Princeton record.
The Tigers went 1-2-3-4-6 in the 800-meter run. Feldman won the race at 2:11.46, matching her personal best to the second. Freshmen Kristin Smoot and Kacie O'Neil placed second and third, respectively at 2:12.70 and 2:12.94. Sophomore Melissa Zajdel finished in fourth place with a run of 2:13.30 and freshman Molly Higgins ran 2:14.03 to finish sixth.
Junior Clare Gallagher was the runner up in the 1500 out of 23 runners, crossing the line at 4:43.55. In the 3000, sophomore Alexis Mikaelian was the runner up with a time of 10:04.81.
Freshman Lily Miller placed sixth in the 100-meter dash at 12.58 with teammate sophomore Abidemi Adenikinju right behind her in seventh place at 12.61. Miller went on to be the top Princeton sprinter in the 200. She finished in fifth pace with a time of 25.34, with junior Danielle Glaeser clocking in at 25.82 for seventh place.
In the 100-meter hurdles, seniors Biance Mathabane and Lauren Barber finished in third and fourth place. Mathabane clocked in at 14.61 and Barber at 14.86. The Tigers earned the same finishes in the 400-meter hurdles, with sophomore Joie Hand third at 1:03.01 and freshman Carrie Vuong fourth at 1:03.54.
The 4x400 relay of Vuong, Hand, Glaeser and Jasmine Blocker placed second at 3:55.28. The 4x100 of Adenikinju, Glaeser, Miller and Erin Guty ran 48.25 to finish fourth.
Billings won the shot put with a throw of 14.55 meters (47-9), more than three feet further than the second-place competitor from Dartmouth. Senior Isabell von Loga placed fourth at 12.73 (40-7).
Senior Emma Ruggiero was the top collegiate thrower in the hammer throw recording a new personal best and Princeton record. Ruggiero threw to 59.21 (194-03), beating her previous mark that was the school record of 58.83 (193-0.25). Billings would take second at 53.34 (175).
Oliver jumped to 12.04 (39-6) to win the triple jump. Senior Bianca Williams was the runner up with a mark of 11.49 (37-8.50), while classmate Tiffany Liu was sixth at 11.11 (36-5.50). Liu went on to take third place in the long jump at 5.51 (18-1).
Senior KC Wade competed for the first time this year sitting out the indoor season with an injury. She reached 1.65 (5-5) in the high jump to place sixth.
Sophomores Lauren Tauscher and Tory Worthen tied for third place in the pole vault at 3.55 (11-7.75), while freshman Samantha Anderson finished tied for sixth place at 3.40 (11-1.75).
Freshman Chelsea Cioffi medaled in the discus, taking third place, with a throw of 39.08 (128-02). Classmate Ashley Vandolah was fifth in the javelin, in her first time out, throwing to 35.82 (117-06).
Princeton will compete at the PYP Meet at Penn next Saturday, April 9.
