PRINCETON, N.J. (4/26/11) - The Princeton track and field teams will compete at the 117th running of the Penn Relays Thursday, April 28 through Saturday, April 30. All track and jumping events will take place at Franklin Field, while throwing events will take place on fields near Franklin Field.
The women's team will compete in the majority if its events on Thursday, beginning with the high jump at 10 a.m. The men will begin competition on Thursday with the steeplechase at 7:30 p.m.
Last year at the Penn Relays Donn Cabral won the men's 3000 steeplechase championship on day one to kick things off for the men's team. Cabral clocked in at 8:48.92 to win the event, 7.32 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Former Tigers Justin Frick and Conor McCullough also medaled. Frick '10 tied for fifth in the championship high jump clearing 2.08 meters (6-9.75) while McCullough took second place in the championship hammer throw reaching 65.57 meters (215-1). The Tigers won the 4x400 Heptagonal cruising in at 3:11.30 to win the six-team event. The relay team was composed of Brian Li-A-Ping '10, Russell Dinkins, Austin Hollimon and Mike Eddy. Princeton finished fifth in the Championship of American 4xMile with a time of 16:21.41. Making up the team was Kyle Soloff (4:05), Trevor Van Ackeren (4:01.2), Nathan Mathabane (4:12.4) and Mark Amirault (4:02.8).
Thanithia Billings won the women's college shot put on opening day of the Penn Relays last year. She recorded a PR with a mark of 15.26 meters (50-0.75), 14.5 inches further than her previous best of 14.89 meters. Billings is just the second thrower in Princeton history to reach over 15 meters in the shot put. In the championship hammer throw, Emma Ruggiero placed fourth with a throw of 55.10 (180-0). KC Wade was in a 13-way tie for first place in the Eastern high jump, clearing 1.61 meters (5-3.25). Tory Worthen cleared 3.95 (12-11.5) to finish in fifth place in the pole vault championship. The Tigers finished eighth in the 4x1500 Championship of America. The team of Ashley Higginson, Sarah Cummings, Alexis Mikaelian and Mel Newberry clocked in a program record time of 18:06.75. The time replaces the 18:08.24 set in 2004 by three-time All-America Emily Kroshus, All-America Catha Mullen, Meredith Lambert and two-time All-America Cack Ferrell.
