Women's Water Polo Team Enters Eastern Championship as Fifth Seed
April 27, 2011 | Women's Water Polo
The field includes 11 teams and the top five teams have byes on the quarterfinal round of the three-day event. Michigan is the tournament's top seed, followed by Hartwick, Indiana, Maryland and Princeton.
The Tigers finished the regular season two weekends back with a loss at Maryland and a win over Brown. The split left Princeton at 16-10 overall and 4-1 in the Southern Division headed into this weekend's championship tournament. Princeton finished up at 5-2 down the stretch with wins over Bucknell, St. Francis, Villanova and Brown over the final few weeks of the regular season. Princeton's two losses came to Michigan and Maryland.
Katie Rigler continues to lead the team in scoring with 50 goals scored in her rookie season. She is followed by Brittany Zwirner (34) and Molly McBee (30) as the Tigers top three scorers are all freshmen or sophomores. Senior Lauren Brunner has 24 goals to rank fourth on the team while sophomore Saranna Soroka (19) rounds out the top five. Brunner leads all players with 23 assists, two ahead of Zwirner, and Zwirner's 47 steals is the team high.
Should Princeton hope to advance in the Eastern Championship, the Tigers will have to turn the tables on teams that got the better of them in the regular season. Princeton was a combined 0-5 against the teams seeded above it in the tournament. Conversely Princeton went 7-0 against the teams seeded below it.
Princeton begins the upcoming weekend against Maryland in the third meeting of the season between the opponents. Maryland won both games by scores of 11-10 and 7-5. The first game came in the ECAC semifinals in late February and the other game was the team's Southern Division game played at Maryland.
Should Princeton win, it would pair up with the winner of the game between Michigan and the George Washington/Mercyhurst winner on Saturday. The entire schedule for the CWPA Eastern Championship can be found here.
