The Class of 2006 Cup: Georgetown

#1 Women's Lights Sweep Georgetown, Complete Perfect Regular Season
April 30, 2011 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
The top-ranked Princeton women's lightweight crew did everything it could in the regular season, completing a perfect 8-0 season and defeating each of the six teams ranked below it in the poll. Following the Tigers' dominant performance Saturday morning against No. 5 Georgetown, Princeton can now turn its full focus towards the postseason.
In its 2011 regular season finale, Princeton swept both the varsity eight and varsity four races during The Class of 2006 Cup regatta against Georgetown; the regatta had been previously scheduled for the Potomac River on April 16, but rough waters forced the competition to be postponed two weeks. It also allowed head coach Paul Rassam's crew to have one more race on Lake Carnegie before it headed south to seek gold on Cooper River twice over the next month.
The varsity eight was in total control of its race, winning in a time of 7:39.3, more than 17 seconds faster than Georgetown. The varsity four was also impressive, as both the Princeton A (8:36.7) and Princeton B (8:52.6) topped the Hoyas' time of 9:02.2.
The win completes an ideal regular season for the Tigers, who opened the year with convincing wins over current No. 2 Stanford and current No. 3 Wisconsin, both of which won a gold medal at one of the two major postseason competitions last year. Since that weekend, Princeton has added five more wins over ranked opponents, including one over No. 4 Radcliffe last weekend.
Princeton is now off for two weeks before it meets its Eastern rivals, including Wisconsin, at the 2011 EAWRC Championships May 15 on Cooper River. GoPrincetonTigers.com will have a full preview the week of the event.
