Men's Heavies Regain Content Cup For 1st Time Since '06 With Win Over Brown
April 30, 2011 | Heavyweight Rowing
This might be a good time for Princeton men's heavyweight supporters to wish for good things in 3s. With its Saturday morning victory over Brown, Princeton regained the Content Cup and earned its first seven-win season since 2006. That is two of the three; a nice third could come in two weeks, if the Tigers could win their first EARC championship since that same 2006 season.
Fourth-ranked Princeton moved to 7-1 on the season, 5-1 in the Ivy League, with a hard-fought victory over Brown in the Content Cup regatta. The Tigers, who will enter the Eastern Sprints having won three straight races, topped Brown for the first time in five tries with a winning time of 6:02.1. Brown, currently ranked seventh nationally, took second in 6:02.1. With the win, Princeton cut into Brown's all-time edge in the Content Cup regatta to 10-8.
Pricneton also claimed wins in the second varsity and freshman eight races, completing one-loss seasons to both boats. Outside of the Compton Cup regatta against Harvard, the Princeton 1V, 2V and F8 each went undefeated during the season. The second varsity won in 6:10.0, 3.2 seconds faster than Brown, while the novice eight won in 6:20.1, 4.1 seconds faster than Brown.
The Bears picked up a win in the third varsity race in a time of 6:28.8, while Princeton took second in 6:41.7.
Princeton will likely enter the Eastern Sprints as the second seed, behind only the third-ranked Harvard Crimson. Those two boats battled it out late in the 2010 Eastern final, with the Crimson edging past the Tigers for the EARC and Ivy League title. The Tigers should be the top seed in their semifinal heat, which should give them a big edge as it seeks a return to the final.
