PRINCETON, N.J. — They came to Princeton in separate classes and remain on divergent paths in their interests and academic careers. One travels to study minerals and volcanoes. One performs in a campus dance company. One sings in an a cappella group. One is a classically trained trombonist. Even on the track, scheduling variances preclude them from training regularly as a foursome. Still, this infrequent collective has produced something sublime.
“No one ever thinks of Princeton when they think of sprinting,” says Mike Eddy, second from left.
This month, Mike Eddy, Russell Dinkins, Tom Hopkins and Austin Hollimon ran the 4x400-meter relay in 3 minutes 7.57 seconds, setting an Ivy League record and placing the Tigers among the nation's top 15 universities in the event, which they will contest again this weekend at the Penn Relays.
“No one ever thinks of Princeton when they think of sprinting,” said Eddy, a senior from Asheboro, N.C., who runs the leadoff leg. “It's nice to sort of shock people.”
