Cabral Repeats as National Runner Up in the Steeplechase
June 11, 2011 | Men's Track and Field
DES MOINES, IOWA (6/10/11) - Junior Donn Cabral is the national runner up in the men's steeplechase. Cabral posted a personal best time of 8:32.14 to capture his second straight second-place finish at the NCAA Track & Field Championships held at Drake University.
Cabral's time is a Princeton record and the second best time in Ivy League history, as he shaved 3.27 off his previous best time of 8:35.60, run at the 2010 NCAA East Regional.
Senior Matt Hughes of Louisville won the race for the second straight year and once again the race came down to he and Cabral, as the pair separated themselves from the rest of the pack midway through the race.
Hughes was in first after one lap, with Andrew Poore of Indiana and Cabral following. Cabral nudged Poore in that second lap to take over second place and Temple's Travis Mahoney moving up into third. After four laps the pair separated themselves from the rest of the pack, hitting 5:08.46 and 5:08.84, respectively after four laps. At the bell lap, Hughes was at 7:18.75 and Cabral at 7:21.39. Hughes would take the last lap in 1:06.12 and finished at 8:24.87, while Cabral ran 1:10.75 to clock in at 8:32.14. Poore would place third at 8:36.40.
In comparing the race to 2010, Hughes had the top time at 8:34.18, followed by Cabral at 8:38.90.
The race was delayed just over an hour because of another storm that passed through the Des Moines area. The meet has been delayed more than six hours in the past three days.
Cabral will contend for another national title when he runs in the 5000-meter tomorrow at 1:21 p.m., CT along with senior Mark Amirault.
