Penalty Kick Decides Men's Soccer Loss to FDU
September 10, 2011 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Not much was usual about the two goals Fairleigh Dickinson scored to beat the Princeton men's soccer team 2-1 Friday night on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium in the Tigers' home opener.
The series has shown a propensity for the dramatic of late, as the last four meetings have now been decided by one goal and all four in at least the last six minutes. Last year, Antoine Hoppenot's 88th-minute goal gave Princeton a win on the road. In 2009, a Teddy Schneider penalty-kick goal at Roberts Stadium with 0.8 seconds left in the second overtime won it for the Tigers. In 2008, Ben Burton put Princeton ahead in the 85th minute for a 2-1 victory in Teaneck, N.J.
FDU's last win in the series came in 2006, and the Knights' last win in Princeton came in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. FDU won a 2005 meeting held at nearby Mercer County Community College.
The first came in the 27th minute when a ball played by FDU along the endline as the action began to move back down the field caromed off a Princeton defender and into the net to put the Knights ahead.
It wasn't one of FDU's (3-1) four shots in a first half in which Princeton tallied twice that many but entered the break scoreless.
Eight minutes into the second half, Princeton broke through with its first goal of the season when Antoine Hoppenot found Cameron Porter with a pass from the endline to the front of the goal for the equalizer.
Princeton had the advantage in shots again in the second half, finishing regulation with a 17-8 edge. Not long into extra time, however, that advantage mattered little.
McVey was moving toward the goal to Princeton keeper Max Gallin's right, closer to the 18-yard-box boundary than that of the six-yard-box when he got tripped up and was awarded the penalty kick. McVey put the attempt inside the left post and FDU came away with its third win of the season in four tries. Princeton, after a scoreless tie and a loss during the College of Charleston's tournament last weekend, fell to 0-2-1.
The Tigers will play next Friday night at Roberts Stadium against Villanova at 7 p.m.
