Volleyball Opens Season, Sabrina King Era With Sweep Of Fairfield
September 02, 2011 | Women's Volleyball
Despite playing in only its first match of the season, the Princeton women's volleyball team showed impressive efficiency in a 3-0 victory over Fairfield at the Hofstra Invitational.
Princeton hit .294 for the match and recorded only 10 errors in a 25-20, 25-19, 25-19 victory over the Fairfield Stags in the opening match of the Hofstra Invitational. Princeton will be back on the court at 4:30 p.m. to take on the Highlanders of NJIT.
Not surprisingly, 2010 first-team All-Ivy League selection Lydia Rudnick led the team with 16 kills, and she added seven digs and two service aces. Fellow first-team All-Ivy League honoree Cathryn Quinn also had a strong debut, recording eight kills and three blocks while hitting a team-best .583 during the win.
Each of King's tri-captains had strong matches. While Quinn was Princeton's most efficient hitter, setter Michaela Venuti paced the offense with 35 assists and added 12 digs. The latter total was topped only by libero Hillary Ford, a four-year starter who led all players with 15 digs.
A pair of sophomores, Sydney Brombal and Leah Jordan, both had strong showings as starters. Brombal recorded 11 digs, seven kills and three aces on the outside, while Jordan had six kills and hit .385 as the second middle.
One freshman who made her collegiate debut was Francie Jenkins, who recorded a pair of kills in the win.
Princeton led for most of the first two sets, but Fairfield pushed Princeton through much of the third and was even at 18 before the Tigers made their final surge. Kills by Quinn and Rudnick forced a Fairfield timeout, and consecutive service aces by Brombal gave Princeton a four-point edge that effectively clinched the win.
