Youth Served For Volleyball As Tigers Complete Perfect First Day
September 02, 2011 | Women's Volleyball
If Sabrina King chose to retire tonight, she'd finish her career with an undefeated record as the head coach of Princeton women's volleyball.
Of course, the Tigers would need their next hire in place by Saturday at noon.
Instead, King will surely be on the sideline Saturday when Princeton resumes its opening weekend of the 2011 season against both St. Francis and Hofstra. With four underclassmen starting and multiple freshmen playing together at various points of the match, the Princeton women's volleyball team got an exciting vision of its future in a tough 3-1 victory over NJIT Friday afternoon. The win completes a perfect first day for Princeton at the Hofstra Invitational.
Sophomores Chelsea Parker and Sydney Brombal shared the team lead with 12 kills apiece, while Parker added 20 digs in the victory. Senior tri-captain Hillary Ford added 27 digs, while both middles Cathryn Quinn and Nicole Kincade added nine kills apiece. Kincade is one of multiple freshmen who had strong showings during their first day of collegiate competition.
"I'm excited about what I saw from our younger players today," King said. "Overall, it was nice to get two wins. There were some good things today, and there were definitely things we need to work on."
Princeton split the first two sets and rallied in the third for a 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 25-18 victory. Both Kincade and fellow freshman Sarah Hanna were in the starting lineup, while classmates Francie Jenkins, Tiana Woolridge and Ginny Willis each saw at least three sets of action.
After dropping the second set, Princeton faced an uphill battle in the third. Trailing 16-10, Princeton ran off seven of the next eight points to force a tie. Another 4-0 run, which included two kills from Quinn, helped the Tigers to a 22-18 lead, and Princeton went on to win 25-23.
Princeton resumes play Saturday at noon against St. Francis and will conclude the weekend against host Hofstra at 7:30 p.m.
