PRINCETON (9/23/11) - The Princeton field hockey team looks to bounce back from a loss in its Ivy League opener when it hosts Yale on Saturday at 12 noon at Class of '52 Stadium. Princeton has dropped its last three games, including two last weekend at Dartmouth and fifth-ranked Syracuse. The Tigers played well in both games but couldn't convert on their chances in the losses.
Princeton fell 2-1 at Dartmouth in the Ivy League opener despite outchancing Dartmouth throughout the contest. After falling behind the Tigers drew even on a goal from freshman Sydney Kirby but the Big Green answered on its second direct corner goal of the game to take a 2-1 lead and then held off a Princeton barrage to get the win. A day later Princeton and Syracuse played in a stalemate for 55 minutes before the Orange overcame Princeton late, scoring five times in the final 15 minutes for the win.
Kirby's goal made her the fifth Tiger to score a goal this season and she is one of seven players with at least one point through five games. Freshman Allison Evans has a team-high three goals and is tied with Kirby with six points. Kirby has four assists to go along with her one goal. Sophomore Amanda Bird and junior Charlotte Krause each have two goals and freshman Colleen Boyce has scored a single goal.
As a result of the losses, the Tigers find themselves under .500 for the first time since an 0-2 start began the 2007 season. Princeton will look to climb back to .500 on Saturday when it meets Yale in both teams' second Ivy game of the season.
Yale is currently 3-3 overall and has won three of four after an 0-2 start to the season. In their current stretch the Bulldogs have defeated Hofstra, Harvard and Sacred Heart, while falling in overtime at nationally ranked Albany. Yale outscored its two opponents, Harvard and Sacred Heart, 14-2 last weekend. Yale also has a loss to Stanford and a double-overtime loss at Quinnipiac.
Princeton leads the all-time series with Yale 35-2-3 and holds a 17-2-1 edge in games played in Princeton. The Tigers have won the last 26 meetings in the series and are unbeaten in 33 games in the series (30-0-3) dating back to 1978. Last season the Tigers won 7-0 at Yale behind three goals from Kathleen Sharkey. Molly Goodman and Allison Behringer also scored in the win.
Following Saturday's game, Princeton will visit third-ranked Maryland on Tuesday.
