Women's Soccer Falls to Yale 2-0 in Ivy Opener
September 24, 2011 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Goals that came 36 seconds apart in the 57th minute of Saturday afternoon's Ivy League-opening women's soccer game gave Yale a 2-0 win over Princeton.
Kristen Forster and Melissa Gavin provided the goals for the Bulldogs, who join Harvard and Columbia as first-weekend victors with Dartmouth and Brown set to play tomorrow.
"I think they were defensive mistakes," Princeton coach Julie Shackford said. "I think they were identical goals."
Yale won despite Princeton outshooting the Bulldogs 13-11 and 6-4 in shots on goal. Yale keeper Adele Jackson-Gibson saved all six such shots to preserve the shutout.
The loss came three days after Princeton outshot Lafayette 29-3 but came away with a 2-2 tie.
"We've outshot teams in many of the games and we just can't finish them," Shackford said. "I thought there were stretches that we played really good soccer. I feel like we just don't reward ourselves for the amount of chances that we create for ourselves."
Those at the top of Princeton's offensive statistics on the season added to their shot totals against Yale, as Jen Hoy had three of the six Tiger shots on goal with Caitlin Blosser providing two and Lauren Lazo one.
The game was the fifth straight in the Yale-Princeton series that has gone to the visitor, and every game in the series from 2005 onward has been decided by no more than two goals.
Princeton will have its next two games on the road, taking Ivy trips to Dartmouth and Brown the next two Saturdays. The Tigers will return home for a non-league game against Francis Marion on Oct. 10.
