September 28, 2011 | Women's Volleyball
Senior Cathryn Quinn and freshman Ginny Willis both played key roles in Princeton's 3-2 volleyball victory over reigning Ivy League champion Penn Friday night. Both were recognized for their performances by winning Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week honors.
Quinn, a first-team All-Ivy League middle last season, recorded 15 kills and eight blocks in the 24-26, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 15-9 victory. She hit .275 for the match and added four digs and four assists. When the stakes were at their highest late in the match, Quinn rose to the occasion; she had three assisted blocks and two kills to account for five of Princeton's last six points in the fifth set.
Quinn's match continued a stellar season for the four-year starter. She leads the Ivy League in points (4.47 per set), and she ranks in the top three among Ivy League players in both kills (3.43) and blocks (1.13) per set. Quinn also ranks seventh in attack percentage (.317).
Willis made her Ivy League debut as the starting setter against the reigning Ivy League champion, and she handled the moment in impressive fashio. She recorded a match-best 48 assists and added 10 digs and two kills; she also guided her team to hitting percentages of .271 (set 4) and .389 (set 5) when the team had no margin for error.
Willis ranks fourth in the league with 9.27 assists per set.
"I'm very pleased with both Cathryn's and Ginny's performance this past Friday," first-year head coach Sabrina King said. "Even though it's their first year playing together, they are connecting well and trouble shooting as they go, which speaks to their maturity and versatility."
