Hoy Scores Early in Women's Soccer Loss at Long Beach State
September 03, 2011 | Women's Soccer
Jen Hoy gave the Princeton women's soccer team an early lead in its opener at Long Beach State Friday evening, but the host 49ers scored three straight to win 3-1.
Hoy, a junior, led Princeton (0-1) in scoring last season and started quickly in the new season, putting in a goal off an assist from senior Sara Chehrehsa with just short of 12 minutes gone in the opening half.
Long Beach State (3-2) tied the game less than seven minutes later on a goal by Nadia Link against Princeton goalkeeper Claire Pinciaro, a junior who was making just her second collegiate start after being pressed into service in the 2010 season finale against Penn. Pinciaro authored a 110-minute shutout that night last November, but Long Beach State scored twice in the second half to win the 2011 opener. Link, who led the 49ers last season with eight goals and paces her team again this season with four, had the go-ahead goal in the 50th minute before Jazz Strozier iced it in the 78th minute.
The 49ers were a challenging draw in the opener beyond already having played four games. Long Beach State opened with two wins, including one against local rival USC, before traveling to Wisconsin and dropping a pair of one-goal games to a pair of teams in this week's NSCAA top-25, Marquette and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Ten of Princeton's starting 11 were returners, with Lauren Lazo as the only member of the Class of 2015 to get a start, playing the full 90. Princeton started the same number of rookies in its opener a year ago, when Gabriella Guzman, who started again in this year's opener, was the only freshman last year to get a start in her first collegiate game. Lazo's fellow rookies Liana Cornacchio, Melissa Downey and Gabrielle Ragazzo also made their collegiate debuts.
Princeton was outshot only by a 10-9 margin and drew eight corner kicks to Long Beach State's four.
The Tigers will return to competition Sunday for the second half of their trip to Southern California when they face Cal State Northridge in a 1 p.m. Pacific Time start. The Matadors (0-4) dropped their first three games to major-conference foes UCLA, Texas and Baylor before falling 1-0 to New Mexico Friday night.
