PRINCETON (10/1/11) - The Princeton field hockey team opens a three-game stretch at home this Saturday with an Ivy League contest against Columbia. Princeton is 1-1 in the Ivy League and sits a game behind a first-place tie between 2-0 Columbia and Dartmouth in the standings.
Princeton went 1-1 over the last week with a win six days ago over Yale at Class of '52 Stadium and a loss at third-ranked Maryland on Tuesday. In the win, Sydney Kirby had two goals and an assist as the Tigers evened their league record at 1-1. Allison Behringer scored her first goal of the season in the game. Three days later the Tigers fell at Maryland by a 6-2 score. Amanda Bird and Allison Evans scored in the loss.
Evans goal was her team-leading fourth of the season, while Kirby's two goal-two assist week moved her atop the Tiger scoring list with a total of 11 points, one more than Evans. Bird ranks third with three goals and seven points.
The results have Princeton 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the league eight games into the season. Princeton will take on Columbia on Saturday at Class of '52 Stadium in the 15th meeting between the schools. Princeton is 14-0 in the series and 7-0 in games played at home. Last year the Tigers won 6-1 behind a three-goal outing from Michelle Cesan. Molly Goodman also scored in the win and Alyssa Pyros notched a pair of assists.
Columbia is currently 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the league. Both of the Lions' wins were by scores of 3-1 and came against Brown and Cornell. Columbia's other win came against La Salle, while the Lions have losses to Drexel, Monmouth, Hofstra and Quinnipiac.
The Tigers remain home next weekend for games against Virginia and Wake Forest. Princeton faced both in the 2010 NCAA tournament last year. Virginia will remain in the area to play UConn on Sunday preceding Princeton's game with Wake.
