PRINCETON (9/7/11) - The 13th-ranked Princeton field hockey team opens its home schedule on Thursday night when sixth-ranked Penn State visits Class of '52 Stadium to play under the lights. Princeton will then welcome Richmond to campus on Sunday afternoon.
Princeton opened its season last weekend with a win and a loss against Patriot League competition. Princeton opened last Friday with a 2-0 win at Bucknell as both Charlotte Krause and Colleen Boyce each recorded their first collegiate goals. Krause redirected a Molly Goodman shot following the insert on a corner and Boyce scored on a penalty stroke. Christina Maida made three saves in the win, including a stop on a penalty stroke moments before Boyce's goal gave Princeton a 2-0 lead.
Two days later the Tigers were stymied 2-0 at 10th-ranked American. The game was scoreless through 61 minutes before the Eagles got on the scoreboard in the 62nd minute. American then made it 2-0 with a goal on a straight corner four minutes later.
Princeton hosts Penn State on Thursday in the 30th meeting between the schools. The Nittany Lions lead 23-6 overall and 9-3 in games played at Princeton. Penn State defeated Princeton 1-0 last season to snap a three-game Princeton win streak in the series. Penn State has started the season with two wins and two losses. The Nittany Lions have wins over Virginia and Lock Haven, but were tripped up against Old Dominion and Connecticut. Penn State's last outing was a 2-1 overtime loss to UConn on Sunday.
The Tigers complete the weekend on Sunday against Richmond at 12 noon. The Tigers are 7-2 all-time against Richmond and hold a 3-1 series edge in games played at Princeton. Princeton has won the last four games in the series, including a 7-1 win at Richmond last year behind Kathleen Sharkey's six goal performance. Richmond is 1-2 overall this season and has dropped its last two games after a win over St. Francis to open the season. The Spiders lost 2-1 to Ohio State in penalty strokes last Saturday in their last game. Richmond will play its cross-town rival Virginia Commonwealth on Friday before Sunday's game at Princeton.
