Wrestling Prepares For New England Trio, Including Pair Of Ivy Showdowns
February 01, 2012 | Wrestling
The Princeton wrestling team will make its return to Ivy League competition with a key trip through New England this weekend. The three-match stretch will include showdowns against both Brown (Friday, 3) and Harvard (Saturday, 2), as well as a Friday night match at Boston University.
Princeton is currently 5-8 on the season, though it has won four of its previous six matches and had some impressive results during the holiday tournaments. Its last outing was the 2012 Ivy opener, a 30-9 loss to No. 4 Cornell; it was one of Princeton's best efforts recently against the Big Red, and it included a win for No. 14 Adam Krop in a nationally ranked showdown at 141 pounds.
Krop has won 11 of his last 12 matches, with his lone loss coming at the Midlands semifinals against then-top-ranked Montell Marion of Iowa. One of three Princeton with 23 victories on the season, he has ascended to a Top-15 ranking, according to the latest Intermat poll.
Senior Daniel Kolodzik, who also has 23 wins, moved into the Top 20 at 157 recently. Kolodzik, who also placed at Midlands, has won his last eight matches, but he can make a real splash in the EIWA this weekend. On Saturday, he will face Harvard's Walter Peppelman, who is ranked fourth nationally; amazingly, of the three ranked above him, two are in the EIWA (top-ranked Kyle Dake of Cornell; third-ranked Ganbayar Sanjaa of American). Peppelman has beaten Kolodzik four times in the last two years, though Kolodzik held close in a 4-0 loss during the 2011 Keystone Open.
Junior Garrett Frey, a two-time NCAA qualifier, is the third Princeton wrestler with 23 victories. He will likely face one of Brown's two 18-match winners Friday when he takes on Billy Waterson. Brown's other wrestler nearing the 20-win mark is Ophir Bernstein; he will take on Princeton's Dan Santoro.
Three Princeton wrestlers are trying to reach the 20-win mark this month. Both Perez and Santoro have 16 wins this season, while senior Andy Lowy is 15-8 and among the team's hottest wrestlers. Lowy has won seven of eight, including a 13-6 win over Cornell.
Harvard will bring a trio of nationally ranked wrestlers into Saturday's match. Joining Peppelman are No. 13 Steven Keith (133) and No. 8 Corey Jantzen (149). Keith will likely take on Perez, who missed the Cornell match with injury but is ready to go this weekend. Jantzen will face Zach Bintliff, who has won three of his last four matches.
Boston University will bring several nationally ranked competitors to the mat, including Fred Santaite (15th, 133) and John Hall (14th, 197).
