February 19, 2012 | Women's Basketball
The Princeton women's basketball team wrapped up its four-game road swing by earning their 12th consecutive victory in a 75-39 win over Cornell. The Tigers, who improve to 19-4 overall, 9-0 Ivy League jumped out early and never looked back.
"I thought tonight we looked really great against the zone; we have been working really hard at that. Once we generate good looks, our shots start to fall. This is the best I've seen us play against the zone and it has been a gradual process. It is at the right time that we are getting better at it, which is great," said head coach Courtney Banghart.
Princeton shot 52.5 percent (32-for-61) from the field, while holding the Big Red to 32.0 percent (16-for-50) in the game. The Tigers also controlled the rebounding battle, 43-25, tallying 30 defensive boards.
Cornell (10-13 overall, 4-5 Ivy League) opened up action with four straight points, before the Tigers found their offensive flow and took control of the game. Princeton broke onto the board at 17:51, when Lauren Edwards picked up a steal and paced down the floor for a layin. Edwards' basket ignited a 22-0 run heading inside the 10-minute mark.
The Big Red responded with a 12-7 run to work to close in on Princeton's double figure advantage. With less than five to play Laura Johnson and Nicole Hung slammed in a pair of three-pointers to prevent a momentum swing and help Princeton enter the break up 39-18.
Second half action saw Devona Allgood continue to control the post, as she worked around the Columbia defenders to go 6-for-9 off quick jumpers to finish with 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds.
At 1:05, Alex Rodgers added a jumper for Princeton to make it a 37-point game, 75-38. It would be the Tigers' largest lead of the evening.
Junior Niveen Rasheed led the Princeton offense finishing with 16 points in 22 minutes, while Edwards had 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers, in 20 minutes of work. Lauren Polansky had a game-high six assists and grabbed three offensive boards.
For Cornell, Taylor Flynn scored a team-high nine points off the bench.
The Tigers return home to host Harvard on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., before playing Dartmouth the following day at 6 p.m. Saturday's game versus the Big Green marks Princeton Plays Pink and Senior Night.
