PRINCETON, N.J. (2/21/12) - The Princeton women's track and field team seeks to win its third straight indoor league title at the 2012 Ivy League Heptagonal Championship at Cornell this weekend, Feb. 24 & 25.
This year looks to be a tight race. Princeton, Dartmouth and Cornell have top marks in four events each, while Columbia and Harvard have three and Brown has two. Princeton, Columbia and Cornell have gone 1-2-3 the last two years, with the point differential shrinking each year.
SPRINTS & HURDLES
Senior Eileen Moran has picked up points in the sprints ever
since her freshman year. Last year she gave her team 14 points on her own by
winning the 60-meter dash and taking third in the 200. Moran has the
second-fastest time in the league in the 60 at 7.61 and third in the 200 at
24.59. She has won the 60 in four meets this season and the 200 twice.
Freshman Emily Easton ranks in the top 10 in both events as well. Also contenders in the sprints are junior Abidemi Adenikinju and sophomore Lily Miller
Freshman Teju Adewole is a hopeful in the 60-meter hurdles. Her time of 8.78 ranks eighth in the league
MIDDLE DISTANCE & DISTANCE
Freshman Cecilia Barowski is the Tigers' best chance in the 400.
She ran a 55.43 at HYP, the second fastest time in the league. Juniors Joie
Hand and Carrie Vuong are contenders in these two events as well, as both have
run the 400 in under 58 seconds this season. Junior Danielle Glaeser should
provide back up as well.
Sophomores Kacie O'Neil and Kristin Smoot both sport top-10 times in the 800 in the league at 2:11. Rookie Andrea Keklak is one second off and has a PR Of 2:08 in the event.
The reigning indoor mile champion junior Alexis Mikaelian will be back to seek her second crown with junior Greta Feldman and sophomore Molly Higgins pushing for points as well. Mikaelian and Feldman are both coming off of terrific cross country seasons in which both earned all-region honors. Feldman and Higgins have both run PRs in the mile this season at under five minutes.
Other possible scorers in the distance events include sophomore Theresa Devine and junior Abby Levene in the 3k and 5k. Both have run the 3k in under 9:46, while Princeton has competed the 5k just once this season.
RELAYS
The 4x800 captured a win last year with a meet and Ivy
League record of 8:43.15. Members of that relay, Feldman, Smoot, Mikaelian and
Higgins are all back this season and once again have the fastest time in the
league entering Heps. Princeton also has the top time in the 4x400 at 3:46.12,
which was put together by Moran, Barowski, Hand and Vuong.
JUMPS
Arguably one of Princeton's strongest events is the pole
vault with six student-athletes capable of earning points. The two-time
reigning indoor pole vault champion Tory Worthen looks to get her third crown
in the event. She once enters the meet with the best mark in the league at 3.96
meters, and has a PR of 4.11. Sophomore Samantha Anderson was the runner up
last year while junior Lauren Tauscher was fourth. Tauscher has reached 3.70
this season, tied for fifth best in the league. Senior Lydia Arias has also
been a scorer in the pole vault while senior Bianca Reo could also score for
the Tigers.
Junior Erin Guty has the best mark for the Tigers in the long jump at 5.44. Sophomores Theresa Kennedy and Lily Miller have also jumped to 5.20 meters or farther. Kennedy is an all-around in the jumps, as a competitor in the long and high jumps. She has a season-best mark of 5.31 in the long jump and 1.70 in the high jump. Kennedy's mark in the high jump is tied for third-best in the league.
Sophomore Imani Oliver has the third-best mark in the league in the triple jump. She reached a PR of 12.44 this year.
THROWS
The Tigers lost throwers Emma Ruggiero and Thanithia
Billings to graduation, the pair consistently were scores in both the shot put
and weight throw. Looking to take on that role are sophomore Chelsea Cioffi and
freshman Nonny Okwelogu. Cioffi has improved in the weight throw every meet
this year. She has thrown back-to-back PRs reaching 14.59 last weekend.
Okwelogu has thrown to 13+ twice this season and her throw of 13.22 ranks
eighth in the league.
MULTI
Princeton has had Kennedy and sophomore Beth McKenna all
compete in pentathlons this season. The pair look to get points in an event the
Tigers haven't traditionally been strong in. McKenna earned 3,229 points this
season that ranks her fifth while Kennedy's 3,121 ranks eighth in the league.
