February 05, 2012 | Women's Basketball
The Princeton women's basketball team employed a double figure second half scoring run to drop Yale 72-47 Saturday evening at Jadwin Gym. The Tigers, who maintain control of first place in the Ivy League, extended their winning streak to eight and improved to 15-4 overall, 5-0 Ivy.
"We didn't think we came out very strong against Brown (yesterday) and whenever we don't play well we really want a chance to redeem ourselves. We talked about (how) we were going to do whatever it took," said head coach Courtney Banghart on her squad's improved performance versus the Bulldogs. "Yale is a tough team and so are we, and it was a good battle."
The Tigers looked like a completely different team versus the Bulldogs, as they forced a quick pace and took off on an immediate 8-0 run to open up action.
Despite their quick baskets, Yale responded with seven unanswered points en route to making it a 10-10 game at 14:51.
Princeton would manage to hold a multi-possession advantage heading into the midpoint of the half, but the Bulldogs prevented any serious offensive spurts to keep the game within range.
At 9:43, freshman Blake Dietrick sailed in a jumper just inside the arc to establish the Tigers' first double figure advantage, 23-13. From that point forward, Princeton would teeter around a double digit lead for the remainder of the game.
In the first half, Nicole Hung came in off the bench and tallied 10 points in 10 minutes to help send the Tigers into the locker room holding a 35-26 lead.
Hung would tally a career-best 14 points, including going a perfect 6-for-6 from the stripe to tie a career-high.
Second half action kicked off similarly to the first, as Devona Allgood headlined an 8-2 Tiger run.
With 13:25 to play, Michelle Cashen added a pair of free throws to bring Yale (12-8 overall, 4-2 Ivy League) within eight, 46-38. It would be the closest the Bulldogs would get for the remainder of the contest, as Princeton responded with a 26-9 scoring rally to close the game out.
The Tigers were dominant on the boards, outrebounding Yale 61-30, for a season-high. Lauren Edwards, Lauren Polansky and Niveen Rasheed each had 10 rebounds apiece, with Edwards and Polansky tying career-highs in the effort. Rasheed also added 10 points for a double-double and brought her career points total to 961.
Princeton shot 44.3 percent (27-for-61) from the field, while holding Yale to 25 percent (17-for-68).
After playing four consecutive games at home, the Tigers will hit the road to face Dartmouth on Friday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. and Harvard at 6 p.m. the following day.
