Yale Defeats Men's Hoops 58-54
February 05, 2012 | Men's Basketball
That advantage will go to Yale after the Bulldogs scored 16 straight points in the first half and never trailed again in a 58-54 win.
With Harvard holding off Columbia Saturday night on the banks of the Charles, the Crimson remained undefeated in the Ivy at 6-0. Like Yale (15-5, 5-1 Ivy), Penn (12-10, 4-1) stayed on Harvard's heels with just one game in the loss column.
"We've had some guys that have been playing well as of late, and then we miss them," Mitch Henderson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of Princeton basketball, said. "The consistency is missing. We've got to find consistent play."
Princeton led 10-5 but then endured a scoring drought of more than nine minutes while the Bulldogs went on the extended run. Yale's largest lead before the break was 11, and the Bulldogs went on to lead by as much as 13.
Princeton cut the deficit to as little as two on a bucket by Mack Darrow with 1:08 to play that made it 53-51 Yale, but the Bulldogs' Jeremiah Kreisberg answered with two free throws at the other end to cap a long possession and put Princeton down four with 29 seconds left.
Rebounding, a key going into the game as the Tigers battled the Ivy League's top team on the glass, was a major factor in Yale's win. Bulldogs senior center Greg Mangano earned his 10th double-double on the season, scoring 20 points with 12 boards, while pacing his team to a 45-34 rebounding edge. Reggie Willhite also had 20 points for the Bulldogs.
Neither team shot well, as Yale won that category at 35.1 percent to Princeton's 33.3. The Tigers' cooling off comes after Princeton made better than 50 percent of its field goals in back-to-back games for the first time this season against Penn and Brown.
The loss dampens the occasion of junior Ian Hummer becoming the 29th Tiger to reach 1,000 career points, which he did with 2:05 to go in the first half. Hummer is the third player since freshman eligibility began in the 1978-79 season to reach 1,000 points as a junior. Teammate Douglas Davis and Kit Mueller' 91 are the only others.
Hummer's 18 points paced Princeton and now has him at 1,015 for his career. Mack Darrow, with 11 points, and Patrick Saunders, with 10, were also in double figures.
Yale snapped a five-game losing streak in the series as Princeton took the last two games at John J. Lee Amphitheater.
Next weekend, the Tigers will return home to end a 12-game stretch of road contests against Division I opponents by facing Dartmouth Friday night in Jadwin Gym.
"It'll be nice to get back to Jadwin," Henderson said. "We need it. I'd much prefer to be going back there in a little better mood, but it'll be nice to be home."
