San Diego State, Saint Mary's Deal Softball One-Run Defeats

STOCKTON, Calif. -- San Diego State and Saint Mary's each defeated the Princeton softball team by a 3-2 score Friday afternoon at a Pacific-hosted tournament.
Princeton (3-15) will have one more game on the spring trip to Northern California when the Tigers take on host Pacific at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time Saturday.
Game 1: San Diego State 3, Princeton 2 (9 inn.)
Princeton scored first and rallied late to tie, but San Diego State pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth to take a 3-2 win.
The Tigers capitalized on a leadoff walk to Nicole Ontiveros to start the game when fellow senior Kelsey VandeBergh brought her home with a double that put Princeton ahead 1-0.
San Diego State (17-16) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when Hayley Miles hit a two-run home run, and Princeton starter Meredith Brown left the game later in the inning. Liza Kuhn (1-5) entered and kept the Aztecs off the board until the decisive ninth inning.
With the international tiebreaker rule in place, SDSU sacrificed the runner to third and Miles came up big again, singling back to Kuhn to bring home the game-winning run. Miles finished 4 for 4 on the day, getting more than half of the Aztecs' seven hits.
Ontiveros and VandeBergh each had two of Princeton's eight hits, while Kuhn struck out five. Rebecca Arbino (8-6) took the win for SDSU.
Game 2: Saint Mary's 3, Princeton 2
For the third time on the trip, Saint Mary's took a close game from Princeton, winning its second one-run game against the Tigers in the span of three days.
Maddie Cousens went 2 for 3 in the nightcap including a solo home run in the second inning that put Princeton ahead 1-0, but three singles, an error and a hit batter led to three runs for the Gaels in the fifth. Princeton added an unearned run in the seventh for the 3-2 final.
Jessica Lemmon (5-6) went the distance for the Gaels, giving up three hits and a walk while striking out nine. Alex Peyton (1-7) allowed nine hits and struck out three, earning just one of the three Saint Mary's runs.
