PRINCETON, N.J. (4/25/12) - The Princeton track and field teams will compete at the 118th running of the Penn Relays Thursday, April 26 through Saturday, April 28 at Franklin Field.
The women's team will compete in the majority if its events on Thursday, beginning with the high jump, pole vault and 400-meter hurdles at 10 a.m. The men will begin competition on Thursday with the steeplechase at 7:30 p.m.
The 4xMile brought Old Nassau its first championship since 1931. The relay team of Mark Amirault, Chris Bendtsen, Donn Cabral and Kyle Soloff won the Championship of America race in 16:19.98. Click here for a story about the relay in the Penn Relays Preview.
David Slovenski finished sixth in the Pole Vault Championship, clearing 4.90 meters (16-0.75). Derek Hynes was second in the Pole Vault Eastern as he cleared 4.75 meters (15-7). It was the best mark in the pole vault of the afternoon, but Hynes finished second based on the pass/fail in each round. George Abyad placed fourth in the Discus College. He threw to 51.82 meters (170-00). It was his second-best throw of the season. Also in the throws, Craig Pearce earned a fifth-place finish in the Hammer Throw Championship. Pearce threw to a distance of 58.73 (192-8) in the final field event of the day. The 4x400 IC4A of Mike Eddy, Russell Dinkins, Tom Hopkins and Austin Hollimon ran 3:08.71 to take second.
Emma Ruggiero got the Penn Relays started off right for the women's team, winning the women's hammer throw championship in the Tigers' first event of the day on Thursday, April 28. Ruggiero threw to 56.75 meters (186-2) to capture Princeton and the Ivy League's first win of the Relays. Samantha Anderson finished sixth in the pole vault college reaching 3.80 meters, and Thanithia Billings was eighth in the shot put championship with a throw of 14.85 meters. The 4x400 relay took fourth with a time of 3:50.00 in the 4x400 Heptagonal, that consisted of the Ivy League teams except Brown. Danielle Glaeser, Carrie Vuong, Eileen Moran and Joie Hand comprised the relay team. The Tigers ran 17:50.45 in the 4x1500 Championship of America. Greta Feldman (4:27.3), Alexis Mikaelian (4:18.7), Alex Banfich (4:32.3) and Marisa Cummings (4:32.2) finished fourth in the event out of 10. It is the first time Princeton ran a 4x1500 this season. The time re-sets the program record time of 18:06.75 that was set in 2010 at Franklin Field by Ashley Higginson, Sarah Cummings, Alexis Mikaelian and Mel Newbery.
