11:59 p.m. - Wow what an exciting day for the Tigers! Donn Cabral won his heat of the steeplechase semifinals to advance to the final on Saturday. He also had the fastest time amongst all steeplers. Also advancing to the finals was Greta Feldman in the 1500. What a pair! Feldman ran a PR, Princeton record and the second-fastest time in the Ivy League history but she qualified for the Olympic trials! With a time of 4:12.73 Feldman finished third in her heat and will run in the final on Saturday. To top it off, senior Trevor Van Ackeren earned second-team All-America honors in the 1500 finished 14th. Proud day for the Orange & Black. Be sure to check out the videos and photo galleries from today.
5:17 p.m. - Back at Drake Stadium. Trevor Van Ackeren and Greta Feldman have checked in for their respective 1500s. The men's is first at 6:15 p.m., and the women's at 6:30 p.m. Once again the top five from each of two heats along with the next two fastest times move on to the final on Saturday. Donn Cabral will be making his way to the stadium around 6 p.m., for his race at 7:25 p.m.Later tonight Coach Fred Samara will be presenting the awards for the men's decathlon. An Olympian in the event, the NCAA asked Samara if he would be the presenter in his own specialty. We're so proud of you Coach! In the meantime the individual track events are about to begin here on another gorgeous 80-degree day.
11:37 a.m. - The track & field championships are unlike any other NCAA championship. It's much more individualized, in terms of training, etc. Unlike basketball, soccer, etc., not everyone competes at the same time, thus not everyone practices, eats or rests at the same time. This morning Joe Stilin and Coach Steve Dolan went over to Drake Stadium to work out at 8 a.m. Damon McLean was contemplating what he was planning on doing for the next few hours after breakfast. Donn Cabral, Trevor Van Ackeren, Brian Leung and Coach Kyle Soloff left for Gray's Lake at 9 a.m., to do a shake out and jog. Afterwards we went to the Nike Hospitality Suite at the Marriott in downtown Des Moines. We checked out the fall line of track & field shoes and got some swag. Time for showers, lunch and some rest before going over to Drake around 5 p.m. Check out a photo gallery of our morning.
11:53 p.m. - Leung finished 16th in the final of the men's 10k and earned second-team All-America honors! Teammates, coaches and fans were spread out around the track to cheer him on. Day 1 is complete and a busy day awaits tomorrow with senior Trevor Van Ackeren and junior Greta Feldman competing in respective 1500-meter semifinals, and senior Donn Cabral races in the semifinal of the men's steeplechase.
5:49 p.m. - It's opening day of the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships here in Des Moines, Iowa. For the second consecutive year Drake University is hosting the event. Beautiful day here and should be in the 80s every day the next three days as well. Competing today for the Tigers is senior Brian Leung in the men's 10,000 at 8:45 p.m., CT, the final event of the day. He's resting up for his event, while the rest of the distance crew took a jog late this afternoon. Check back in later for another update.
