Princeton staged an impressive comeback at Penn State, down by 20 points with less than nine minutes to go and down 12 with less than four minutes to go to force overtime and go on to defeat Penn State 81-79. Princeton made 12 of its last 17 field goal attempts to fuel the comeback and seal the win. T.J. Bray had his second double-double both of his career and of the season, dishing out 13 assists to go with 11 points. Will Barrett tied a career high with 24 points and had 16 of Princeton's 25 points as the deficit shrunk from 20 to 3.

• Princeton is off to its best start since the 1997-98 team, a fact that will remain regardless of Saturday's outcome, whether 8-1 or 7-2 through nine contests. The '97-'98 team had Mitch Henderson as a senior and was ranked No. 19 in the nation by the AP after its ninth game, which was a 69-64 win over No. 23 Wake Forest at the Meadowlands. That game remains Princeton's last win away from Jadwin Gym over an AP-ranked team.

• Princeton's setting this week is the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic, an event that runs five days in total with 14 games between Thursday and Sunday. A total of 14 programs between Division II men's, Division II women's and Division I men's teams are competing. Princeton by far wins the award for the furthest travel to the event at 2,220 air miles, beating out the University of West Florida men (1,650 miles) as the only programs from East Coast states at the event.

• Princeton joins the University of Portland, the University of the Pacific and Bradley University as Division I men's teams in the event. While Princeton doesn't face Bradley, Pacific avoids Portland and what would have been an intra-conference game when Pacific agreed to rejoin the West Coast Conference in March 2012 effective July 2013. Pacific had been a member of the WCC from its founding in 1952 through 1971 before joining the Big West, whose tournament the men's hoops team won in its last appearance for that league's automatic ticket to the Big Dance.

• This will be Princeton's second visit to Las Vegas and second to Nevada. The other time, Princeton was handled 69-35 by the No. 1 Runnin' Rebels, led by 19 points from Anderson Hunt on Dec. 19, 1990. Future No. 1 pick Larry Johnson, not long before his "Grandmama" days, was one rebound away from a double-double with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and a game-high nine boards.

• Princeton has an administrative connection to each of the other three schools in the D-I men's event, with Bradley athletic director Mike Cross and West Coast Conference commissioner Jamie Zaninovich counting Princeton as their last positions before their present roles.

• Though Princeton has never faced Portland, the program does have connections to its city and home state. Two of Princeton's greatest achievements in men's basketball came in Oregon, when Princeton advanced to the 1965 Final Four held in Portland's Memorial Coliseum, until 1995 home of the Portland Trail Blazers, and in 1983 when it knocked off fifth-seeded Oklahoma State as a 12 seed on Oregon State's home floor in the NCAA Round of 32. The last time Princeton faced a team from Oregon was in the 1975 NIT, when Princeton took out the Oregon Ducks 58-57 in the tournament semifinal on the way to the title. Princeton is 1-1 all-time against the Ducks, the only Oregon team Princeton has faced.

• Princeton is 4-3 all-time against WCC schools at the time of the game, having faced San Francisco (1-1), Santa Clara (1-2), Loyola Marymount (1-0), and San Diego (1-0). The last of those games came at Santa Clara on Dec. 28, 2002, a 77-71 loss in that team's Cable Car Classic, and Princeton's last win over a WCC school came on March 10, 1991, a 76-48 dismantling of Loyola Marymount in a nationally televised game on CBS as a lead-in to the NCAA Tournament selection show. There were no games for Princeton against WCC schools between those two contests.

• The last time Princeton faced a team from California was on Nov. 29, 2009, an 81-60 loss at Berkeley. Though there was a loss to Stanford in 2005 in between, Princeton's last win over a California school came on Dec. 6, 2003 over Fresno State, a 72-67 win in Fresno. The Cal game was also the last time Princeton played in the Pacific Time Zone.

• No matter what, the Tigers will win Friday night, and it's been a while since anyone has been able to use that corny line when referring to a Princeton men's basketball game. Though there are 11 other schools which use Tigers as their nickname, the last time Princeton faced any of them was on Nov. 13, 1999 against Missouri. Princeton is 0-3 in games against its Tiger brethren, including two losses to Mizzou (the other in 1957) and one to Memphis, in 1970.

• Princeton is scoring at a rate unseen in more than 40 years so far, as the team's average of 73.1 ppg is its highest through nine games since the 1971-72 season (84.3 ppg). That season is also the last time Princeton scored at least 66 points in each of its first nine games, as it has done this season.

• The Penn State win allowed Princeton to eclipse its longest win streak in two-plus seasons under Mitch Henderson, now at seven games. It's the longest streak since the 2010-11 Tigers reeled off 10 straight.

• The Tigers have upped their point total from first halves to second halves in four straight games and six of nine this season. That difference from half to half was never bigger, nor more necessary, than Saturday night at Penn State, when Princeton scored 23 in the first half and 43 in the second (plus 15 in the OT).

• Pacific will be Princeton's fourth top-100 Pomeroy-ranked opponent of the season to date, as of Monday's rankings. Butler checked in at No. 56, with Penn State at No. 70 and Bucknell at No. 89 and Pacific at No. 94. Princeton was ranked No. 67 and defeated Bucknell in Lewisburg by 13 points on Nov. 30 before knocking off Penn State last weekend. The Tigers didn't have T.J. Bray and were abnormally struggling from the free throw line (23-37) when they had their three-point loss at Butler on Nov. 16.

• There are no common opponents that both Princeton and Pacific or Princeton and Portland have played to this point. Pacific doesn't play anyone that Princeton plays (other than Portland) and Portland defeated Princeton's Ivy League foe Columbia 69-52 in Portland on Nov. 22, but Princeton hasn't faced Columbia yet.

• Entering the week, Princeton led the Ivy League in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.43), fewest fouls (151), fewest turnovers (95) and 3-pointers per game (10.6). Princeton's best national ranking was third with the 10.6 3s per game. Pacific was 144th in the nation and sixth in the WCC in 3FG percentage defense, allowing a .328 clip, and Portland was 334th in Division I and 10th in the WCC in the stat, allowing a .411 clip.

• Princeton's scoring average figures to remain high this weekend, based on the opponents' stats. Pacific is scoring 78.4 ppg and allowing 73.2, and Portland is scoring 80.2 ppg and allowing 72.1. Both Pacific and its opponents are hitting their field goals at a rate of at least 45 percent, with .468 for Pacific and .451 for opponents. Portland is also a strong shooting team, at .458, while the Pilots' foes are hitting at a .418 clip.

• Princeton's mettle on the glass figures to be tested this weekend as well, with both opponents outrebounding their opponents by better than four rebounds a game (Pacific 4.8, Portland 4.2). Princeton has a rebounding advantage of 0.1 rpg, a number that took a hit after the Tigers were outrebounded by 22 at Penn State. Princeton had outboarded four of its first five opponents but has now been outrebounded in three of the last four games.

• Princeton's 244 3-pointers attempted are the most through nine games for the program since the rule came into effect for the 1986-87 season. The 1995-96 team had 239 tries through nine games. The top two 3-point shooters on that team? Freshman Brian Earl had 61 3-point tries through eight games, and sophomore Mitch Henderson had 48. Princeton has tied the '95-'96 team for most 3s made through eight games, at 95.

• Princeton has more than doubled its opponents in the number of 3-pointers made this season, canning 95 to 40 for its foes. The Tigers have also tried significantly more than their opponents, though not quite twice as many, 244-133.

• Of Princeton's 474 field goal attempts this season, 244, or 51.5 percent, have been from beyond the arc. Six players have more tries from beyond the arc than from inside, including Will Barrett (49 of 66), Ben Hazel (50-71), Spencer Weisz (26-46), T.J. Bray (28-47), Chris Clement (14-18) and Clay Wilson (5-5).

• Princeton has tried more 3-pointers than its opponents in eight of nine games this season. The only game that the opponent tried more was at Butler, when the Bulldogs dialed long distance 24 times (making nine) to Princeton's 20 (eight made).

• Princeton has held its opponent below .400 from beyond the arc in eight of nine games this season, with the Lafayette game as the exception. The Leopards made 6 of 11 (.545) from distance, pushing the game to overtime before losing 81-80.

• In Princeton's only loss this season, at Butler on Nov. 16, the Tigers had a season-low nine assists and shot a season-low .622 from the stripe on 37 attempts, by far a season-high. It was the only game this season in which Princeton didn't have at least 56 percent of its baskets assisted. The Tigers had nine of 18 (.500) buckets with helpers in their trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Tigers also didn't have T.J. Bray for that game (injured) and all Bray has done in his five games played this season is average 15.0 ppg and lead the team in assists per game at 7.2, including games of 13 (Penn State), 10 (George Mason) and eight assists (Rutgers).

• Princeton returns nearly 75 percent of its scoring from a year ago despite graduating reigning Ivy Player of the Year Ian Hummer '13. The team also returns 71 percent of its starts and 67 percent of its minutes, with Denton Koon, T.J. Bray, Will Barrett and Hans Brase all having started at least 18 games last season.

• 37.4 percent of Princeton's points this season have been scored by players who weren't on the 2012-13 roster, including rookies Spencer Weisz (8.9 ppg), Peter Miller (2.6 ppg) and Steven Cook (1.3 ppg), junior Ben Hazel (10.8 ppg) and senior Jimmy Sherburne (7.2 ppg). Hazel and Sherburne took the 2012-13 season off from Princeton.

• Seven players (Bray, Brase, Koon, Hazel, Barrett, Weisz, Sherburne) have played 89.4 percent of the minutes this season and have scored 92.6 percent of the points.

• Princeton is 6-0 when leading at the half this season. It rallied when down five at the half against Lafayette and down 12 at the half at Penn State but came up one possession short in a three-point loss at Butler when down two at the half.

• Princeton has trailed in the second half in five games this season: Butler, Lafayette, Bucknell, Rutgers and Penn State, including by double figures at Butler (13) and Penn State (20). The Tigers came within a final possession at Butler and came all the way back at Penn State.

• In a Princeton-offense staple, the Tigers have assists on 63.6 percent of their field goals compared to 40.6 percent of opponents' baskets.

• The Tigers have a six-member freshman class and, as of the FDU game, all six of them have seen game action, including Henry Caruso, Khyan Rayner, Hashim Moore, Steven Cook, Peter Miller and Spencer Weisz. Miller has played in six games, and Weisz has started six contests while playing in all seven.

• Portland's top national rankings entering the week were centered around assists, whether assist-to-turnover ratio (26th, 1.44), assists per game (21st, 16.7) or total assists (29th, 167).

• Sending Pacific to the line doesn't seem to work out well for its opponents. Pacific has three of the top 10 free throw shooters in the WCC entering the week and was the seventh-ranked FT shooting team in Division I through last weekend. Ross Rivera (.929), Andrew Bock (.912) and Sama Taku (.833) were the Pacific players in their league's top 10.

• Pacific has shot better than 45 percent in four straight games and 50 percent or better in two of the last four. The Oregon loss was the team's only time that it shot below 40 percent. Pacific's opponents have shot better than 40 percent in eight of nine games this season (Western Illinois), and opposing teams have had at least 10 assists in every game.

• Pacific has started the same nine players in each game: Andrew Bock, Tony Gill, Trevin Harris, Khalil Kelley and Sama Taku. Nine players have played in all nine games, and all of the usual starting five except Kelley average in double figures, at least 11.7 ppg. Only Taku and Kelley are back from Pacific's starting five from the team that won last season's Big West Tournament and advanced to the NCAAs.

• Pacific coach Ron Verlin is in his first season as head coach after spending 19 seasons assisting the now-retired Bob Thomason. The pair helped Pacific to five NCAA Tournaments including four of the last 10. Two of those trips saw Pacific knock off Big East teams in the Round of 64 in Providence (2004) and Pittsburgh (2005).

• Portland has also started the same five players in all of its games: Kevin Bailey, Ryan Nicholas, Thomas van der Mars, Alec Wintering and Bryce Pressley. Bailey, Nicholas and van der Mars average at least 12 points a game, but the trio are the only Portland players averaging double figures. Nicholas is averaging a double-double entering the weekend, adding 10.1 rpg to his 13.2 ppg.

• Portland has made NCAA Tournament appearances in 1959 and 1996. Head coach Eric Reveno is in his seventh season at Portland after spending nine seasons as an assistant at Stanford. During Reveno's tenure at Stanford, the Cardinal defeated Princeton 58-34 in Oakland on Dec. 21, 2005.

• Portland is 0-4 when shooting below 46 percent from the field and 6-0 when hitting at least 46 percent.

• While Portland has had double-figure assists in each game, its opponents have reached 10 helpers in just six of 10 games. Portland was 3-3 in those games.

• Portland is 6-1 when Thomas van der Mars scores in double figures and 0-3 when the 6-11 center does not score at least 10 points.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his third season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 45-24.

Under Henderson, Princeton is 23-6 at home, 20-8 in the Ivy League, and 13-1 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 34-8 when leading at the half under Henderson and has won 18 straight such games.

Henderson is aiming to become the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 to have winning seasons in each of his first three campaigns. He would be the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Luehring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04).  

Henderson is in ninth place on the Princeton all-time wins list, with predecessor Sydney Johnson '97 in eighth with 66 wins over four seasons. With 37 wins through his first two seasons, Henderson was fourth on the list of wins for Princeton coaches through their first two campaigns, behind Carmody (51), van Breda Kolff (39), and Carril (39).

Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95.

Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now fifth, having been surpassed by one of his players, Ian Hummer '13. Henderson graduated fifth in career assists (kept since 1974-75) and is now eighth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, current San Diego Padre Will Venable '05 and Marcus Schroeder '10.   Henderson is one of seven Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond), Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State). The Tigers are second only to North Carolina (eight) in alumni as current D-I head coaches.

Prior to Princeton, Henderson coached at Northwestern for 11 seasons under his final head coach at Princeton, Bill Carmody, from 2000-11.
