August 02, 2013 | Field Hockey
Princeton rising sophomore Teresa Benvenuti '16 and the U.S. U21 Field Hockey National Team currently are competing in Mönchengladbach, Germany at the Junior World Cup.
The tournament began on July 27th with the Americans opening with a sound 4-1 victory over Korea to commence pool play.
The following day, Benvenuti served up her first assist of the competition in the 45th minute to put the U.S. on the board. It would not be enough as Team USA suffered a 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands.
Tides changed for the Americans in their final match in the group stage on July 30th. Behind a 6-0 shutout over Ghana, the U.S. positioned itself for advancement to the quarterfinals and a meeting with Argentina.
Despite seeing tenacity throughout the tournament, particularly after their loss to the Netherlands, Team USA was unable to overcome their first half 1-0 deficit and eventually conceded a 2-0 victory to the Argentinians.
Benvenuti and the Americans will face Australia on Friday, Aug. 2 for fifth through eighth placement.
Midfielder Benvenuti is a member of the U.S. Senior National Team, but is eligible to compete for the U21s.
