PRINCETON, N.J. (8/21/13) - Sophomore Kimberly Newell received an elite honor this week when she was selected as one of 13 players to join the Canadian national women's program for the Canada's National Women's Program Red-White Series.
Hockey Canada made the announcement on Sunday, Aug. 18, at the conclusion of the development team camp.
The 13 players join the 27 centralized players on the national team. Those 40 players will be split into two teams for the Red-White Series, which will take place Aug. 21-24 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.
“As with any Team Canada roster there were many difficult decisions,” head coach Tim Bothwell said. “The 40 players at camp all worked extremely hard, performed well and maintained terrific attitudes throughout a physically and mentally demanding week. We are confident the 13 players selected will represent themselves and Canada's National Women's Development Team well in the three-game Red-White series this week.”
Newell earned a gold medal with the Canadian U-18 team at the 2013 IIHF Women's World Championship this past winter. In her first year at Princeton, she earned a starting role and played in 26 games. With a 10-14-2 record, Newell recorded a .915 save percentage and a 2.90 goals against average making 768 total saves on 839 shots. Newell earned her first career win at RIT on Oct. 19 and made a career-high 47 saves against Ohio State on Nov. 23. She was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on Feb. 5 after a sweep of Yale and Brown.
