WEEK 5 GAME NOTES (PDF)
The Week that Was
Remaining undefeated in Ivy League play, the Princeton University field hockey team split a pair of games last weekend with Yale University and then-No. 12 University at Albany. Knotted at 1-1 with the Bulldogs at the intermission, the Tigers erupted for three goals during a span of 13-plus minutes in the second half to secure their 30th-consecutive victory over their conference rival. Travelling to Albany, N.Y. the following afternoon to take on the nationally ranked Great Danes, the Orange and Black battled the home team to a scoreless tie at the break. Coming up with the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute, the Great Danes added an insurance tally at 67:44 to pick up their first-ever win over Princeton.
Doubling Down
Pacing the Princeton attack against Yale, Sydney Kirby matched a career-high with two goals. Finding the back of the net off of penalty corners in the 19th and 48th minutes, the Tigers' tri-captain notched a pair of tallies in a game for the fifth time in her career. Earlier this season against No.3 Virginia, Kirby scored on penalty corners just 11:21 apart. During the team's national championship season, Kirby posted two goals in consecutive NCAA games against Drexel (Nov. 10, 2012) and Virginia (Nov. 11, 2012). In 60 career appearances, Kirby has amassed 64 points (24G, 16A).
Closing In
Kristen Holmes-Winn sits just two wins shy of her 150th as the head coach of the Princeton field hockey program. Her 148 victories thus far rank second only to Beth Bozman (188) on the school's all-time charts. The Tigers have posted double-digit wins in all but two of her 12 seasons, including a program-record 21 victories during the team's 2012 national championship run. Going 75-4 against the Ivy League, Holmes-Winn has helped guide Princeton to 10 conference titles.
Climbing the Charts
Recording an assist against Yale, Allison Evans now sits just 13 points shy of becoming the ninth player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau. Currently, her combined 52 goals and assists sit tied for 11th on the Tigers' all-time charts. In each of her three seasons she has posted double-digit goals with a career-high 12 as a sophomore. As a freshman she finished with 27 points, while amassing 57 points over the last two years.
Making an Impact
A big part of Princeton's 4-1 win over Yale last Saturday, Kate Ferrara and Hailey Reeves assisted on a pair of goals off of penalty corners. Putting the Tigers on the board in the 19th minute, Reeves inserted to Ferrara, who stopped it for Kirby at the top of the circle. In the 48th minute, Reeves played the insert directly to Kirby for the Orange and Black's third score. Through Princeton's first five games, the Tigers managed just two goals off of 25 penalty corners. Earning 18 penalty corners over their last three games, Princeton has found the back of the opposing net on three occasions. On the other end of the field, Reeves and Ferrara have helped stabilize a backline that has surrendered just four goals in its last four games after giving up 13 scores in its first four outings.
Coming Home
Playing six of its first nine contests on the road, Princeton returns Bedford Field on Sunday against Syracuse. The Tigers will play seven of their final eight at home, beginning a six-game stretch at Bedford against the Orange. Under head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn's tenure, Princeton has posted an 82-26 (0.759) record on its home turf, including a 51-7 (0.879) mark since 2008. Despite the familiar surroundings, things won't be easy for the Tigers, with its seven upcoming home opponents combining for a 39-19 (0.672) record heading into this weekend.
When Last We Met
Princeton cruised to a 5-0 win over Columbia last season. Scoring all five of their goals in the first half, the Tigers wasted little time getting on the board, with Cassidy Arner recording the first tally just 24 seconds after the opening whistle. After a Cat Caro goal at 6:31, Arner put away her second of the day at 22:30. Allison Evans closed out the scoring with a pair of goals in the 24th and 31st minutes. Princeton finished with a decisive 31-4 shot advantage and a 9-1 edge in penalty corners. Also squaring off with Syracuse a year ago, the Tigers suffered a 4-0 road loss to the Orange. Tallying four scores in a span of 17:19, Syracuse found the back of the Princeton cage in the 10th, 19th, 21st and 27th minutes. The Orange finished with a 13-9 shot advantage and a 4-2 edge in penalty corners. Anya Gersoff made six saves for the Tigers.
Rivalries Renewed
Princeton is 17-0 all-time against Columbia with a 9-0 home record and 8-0 mark on the road. Outscoring the Lions 18-0 in the first two meetings in 1997 and 1998, the Tigers surrendered their first goal to their league rivals in a 6-1 victory in 1999. Columbia's best chance to knock off Princeton came in a 3-2 double overtime loss in 2011. The Tigers have shut out the Lions in the last two match-ups, holding a 13-0 scoring edge. Princeton owns an 11-6 all-time mark against Syracuse. Capturing the first meeting in 1988 (3-2) the Tigers emerged victorious in seven of the first eight showdowns. With Princeton winning three-in-a-row in 2009-10, the Orange have returned the favor, capturing each of the last three meetings.
Scouting Columbia
Getting off to a 4-1 start, Columbia has dropped two of its last three outings. Last weekend, the Lions split a pair of games against Cornell and Georgetown. Krysten Mayers accounted for Columbia's lone goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Big Red, with Cornell netting the game winner with just 57 seconds remaining in the first extra session. Lions' goalie Kimberly Pianucci made five saves as the Big Red finished with a 12-7 shot advantage and a 6-4 edge in penalty corners. Rebounding against the Hoyas the following afternoon, Columbia cruised to an 8-1 victory. Led by Kyle Marsh's two goals and two assists, 10 different Lions factored into the scoring. Katie Ruesterholz had two goals and a helper, while Zoe Blake recorded a pair of scores. Blake currently leads the team with 16 points (7G, 2A). Pianucci has logged 467:31 minutes in net with a 2.10 goals against average and 0.725 save percentage.
Scouting Syracuse
Opening the season on a six-game win streak, Syracuse is just 1-4 in its last four outings. After suffering a 3-1 loss to No. 3 Virginia last Saturday, the Orange put the brakes on a three-game skid with a 6-2 victory over Hofstra. Down 3-0 in the second half, Lieke Visser netted Syracuse's only goal against Virginia in the 54th minute. Jess Jecko made five saves for the Orange, who were outshot 19-11. Visser paced Syracuse in the win over the Pride, finishing with two goals and an assist. Jordan Page, Alyssa Manley, Laura Hurff and Annalena Ulbrich also got on the board for Syracuse, which held a 24-6 shot advantage. Visser leads the team in points (20) with five goals and 10 assists. Page has 19 points on the year, while Jecko has gone 5-3 in eight outings with a 1.88 GAA and 0.674 save percentage.
